Charlie Baker contemplating selling the Hynes Convention Center.

If you're new to the city or taking the T in from out of town, this is where you can get advice from people living in The Hub. Please keep discussion limited to things in and around Boston.

Charlie Baker contemplating selling the Hynes Convention Center.

Post by Sayoria »

https://www.boston.com/news/local-news/ ... -expansion

He wants to use the sale of the Hynes to expand the BCEC in the Seaport District. This could mean that the Hynes could be turned into other things such as other stores, condos, or something else entirely. Of course, it is possible that if this happens, someone who buys it could maintain it as a convention center as well, but who knows?

This is something I think that con-goers, especially those who live in the area should be concerned about. I love Anime Boston's venue and I have always loved the convention center. It is something I think we should all be watching out for. This could be bad news for the convention going forward.

Sale of the building has been confirmed but it's not yet know what the fate of the Hynes will be yet.

Apparently it's up in the air:

There seems to suddenly be a lot of articles about the Hynes on Facebook.
Has something happened?

From a few minutes of googling and reading...

It looks like the folks in favor of selling it paid a 3rd party to do a feasibility study on what could be done with the property. That study got released, suggesting they could turn the whole thing into a mix of office space, housing, and more commercial space. Some minor investigative reporting poked some holes in the study (mostly around a complete lack of structural engineering work). They can't sell without the approval of the state legislature, so there's gonna be a bunch of this sorta stuff happening in public (and probably other stuff happening behind closed doors) until an agreement is met.

Then the sale is on hold indefinitely ^_^

Wonderful news!

Has there been an update on this? If AB ends up moving to the BCEC I wouldnt be mad about it but the Hynes is such a great location and tradition.

I was here wondering the same thing, in part. The official Web page is still part of the Boston convention center site.

There is also this opinion piece, which indicates what the status was last October:

* Mikula, Andrew (15 October 2020). "In Light of COVID-19, Massachusetts Should Rethink Its Convention Center Bureaucracy". Pioneer Institute ("for Public Policy Research").

I'll go in on it with you, but do you think we could get a few more people? Like a couple of thousand. :-)

We'd be better off building our own convention center, or at least buying the Sheraton to boot.

Edit: Made two minor corrections, of grammar and spelling.
