What do YOU want to see?

Hey all,

I'm Todd and am the video room coordinator this year. I am looking for some video room feedback. What would you like to see? I'll do my best to get permission to show some of them.

Ground rules.

1. No fan-subs or things that haven't been licensed domestically
2. nothing that is undergoing a current or recent Theater run, they just won't license those :-( I've been trying though most companies just don't have the BD's to share yet.
3. No Hentai

In terms of anime showings? Or fan-made AMVs content and parodies?

I'm only in control of the normal video rooms, but I can bug the Fan Parody people to get over here and look if you have ideas.

I would suggest, for those who are relatively new to anime, we should always try to pay homage to some of the greats that have come before they began watching. Suggested Series/Movies include - Akira, Astro Boy, Big O, Black Jack, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Eureka Seven, FLCL, Gatchaman, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Goldenboy, Kiki's Delivery Service, Lupin the 3rd, Mobile Suit GUNDAM Wing, Mobile Suit GUNDAM OO, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ninja Scroll, One Piece, Outlaw Star, Project A-Ko, Rurouni Kenshin, Sailor Moon, Sorcerer Hunters, Speed Racer, Spirited Away, Steamboy, Summer Wars, Tenchi Muyo OVA, The Slayers, The Wings of Honneamise, Thundercats, Vampire Hunter D, Voltron & Yu Yu Hakusho to name a few.

I'll second a lot of what's on Kalyoth's list!

Also, as I have in the past, I'd like to suggest a few titles that (IMHO) sometimes get lost in the shuffle.

First, some oldies (and trying my best to avoid titles in licensing hell)...
The Wallflower
Pumpkin Scissors
Kiddy Grade
Rozen Maiden
Ninja Nonsense
DearS
Bubblegum Crisis
(to my mind, a forgotten classic)
Robot Carnival (yes, there is a R1 DVD!)

And a few more recent...
Maoyu
Good Luck Girl!
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
The Garden of Words
(or anything from Makoto Shinkai, actually)
Hozuki's Coolheadedness
Okami-san and Her Seven Companions
C - Control: The Money and Soul of Possibility

A lot of these might be difficult or too new to get licensing, but one can hope. Here are my ideas:
- Galaxy Express 999 (1978)
- Tenchi Muyo (1992)
- Ninja Scroll (1993)
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)
- Serial Experiments Lain (1998)
- Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (2006)
- Spice and Wolf (2008)
- Steins;Gate (2011)
- The irregular at magic high school (2014)
- I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying (2014)
- Overlord (2015)

And so many of the ones posted already are good!!! :)

Not sure if we’re still able to make requests for the 2018 video programming (this thread is kinda old) but just wanted to put in a request for the currently airing Pop Tram Epic. Besides the fact that the show is just great in general, it seems like the kind of show that would be really fun to watch in a big group together!

I know this thread is from 2016, but, with this year's theme being To The Stars, I thought of a title that would be fitting: Stratos 4, and also Stratos 4: Return To Base. :) :) The series originally ran from January-March of 2003.

Likely late for this year - but good for next year as well - Mobile Suit Gundam Origins - I totally enjoying this series retelling. The Wings of Honneamise is an old favorite. Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Char's Counterattack would fit right in. Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop.

I thought of another title for this year, if possible: Daft Punk's Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. ^_^ ^_^

I've never seen Mobile Suit Gundam Origins, and I can't remember if I saw Char's Counterattack, but all the other ones you listed, I love them all!! Great suggestions!! :D :D

Just as a head up, we are going to try something a little different this year (2019). We are going to be focusing on movies this year. We are hoping to have between 60% and 70% of total video content be 1 hour+ movies. In general we've found that they are better attended and fans are less likely to have already seen them on a streaming platform.

Stay Tuned!

Well then, you should have a variety of fairly recent releases (not necessarily recent productions) that should still be under license. A fair number of films on this list are Discotek/Eastern Star titles:

Arcadia of My Youth
Ringing Bell
Colorful
Hal
Hells
Robot Carnival
In This Corner of the World
Mary and the Witch's Flower
Your Name
Napping Princess
A Letter to Momo
Aura: Koga Maryun's Last War
The Life of Budori Gusuko
Night on the Galactic Railroad
Like the Clouds, Like the Wind
Miss Hokusai
Panda, Go Panda!
Vampire Hunter D/Bloodlust
The Empire of Corpses
Genocidal Organ
<harmony/>

Makoto Shinkai features
Satoshi Kon features
Mamoru Hosoda features

Some titles that I'd like to see are:

"Napping Princess"
"A Silent Voice"
"The Wind Rises"
"Your Name"
"Fireworks"
"I Want To Eat Your Pancreas"
"Voices Of A Distant Star"
"From Up On Poppy Hill"
"Only Yesterday"
"Whisper Of The Heart"
"Children Who Chase Lost Voices"
"Wolf Children"

To name a few. :) :)

Some level setting for you all, In general Studio Ghibili films are a non-starter. Specific requirements from Japan make it a very big equipment/financial commitment to show anything. You need to either show 35mm or via theatrical playback equipment, we aren't likely to do this because of the expense. Maybe some year, but this isn't the year. I do ask every single year if this requirement has changed.

Most other companies don't have this requirement and BluRay or digital playback system specific formats are fine. (like last year when we showed Mary and the Witches Flower)

Everything else on your lists was on my consideration list. In general the split between studios having a home video dept and a theatrical department means that showing some of the films mentioned above aren't available via our normal channels or are expensive.

We have a bunch of great stuff lined up. I'm really stoked for what we've gotten this year.

I realized just now I had listed as one of my movie requests "A Distant Voice". I meant to type "A Silent Voice". WHOOPS!! LOL!! I fixed that. :D :D

Thank you also for explaining about the differences between Studio Ghibli films and films from other companies. I never knew that before.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you have in store this year. ^_^ ^_^

Wasnt sure if you were talking voices of a distant star, or a silent voice. Either way. They are on the list

I wonder if this will change if/when 4K becomes more mainstream, and the equipment more affordable. Sounds to me that one of the underlying issues Ghibli may have is Blu-ray's relative lack of resolution.

I am loving the show but i'm personally not very big on or familiar with licensing live action Japanese stuff. It also doesn't do great in video rooms and often only appeals to people that liked the original anime content. The schedule is pretty much set in stone for this year so look forward to it.

Now that the schedule is live i wanted to share some of the major wins within video programming this year. My goal this year was 70% movie/ova programing and 30% tv programming. According to crappy napkin math I'm at 60%, but that still awesome! I wasn't sure I was even going to hit 50% as it turns out getting movies is harder and more expensive then expected.

We'd also like to thank TRSI for sponsoring one of the video rooms.

Going to video rooms shows the AB staff and industry that you value this type of content and gives us more power when negotiating or working to get new content for you. Don't forget to buy your fav's in the dealers room or online at https://www.rightstuf.com

I have a question RE "Your Lie In April":

In the description, it says "Episodes: 4". Does that mean it's eps. 1-4, or eps. 4-8?

as a general rule, we almost never show anything but episodes 1-4 or 1-5 depending on timing. In general a show that runs 24 mins an episode means we COULD fit 5 in perfectly assuming everything just played on time, but normally we can't beacuse of FBI warnings etc.

Ahhh, I get it. Thank you much for the clarification. :) :) I was always used to seeing in the description it saying Episodes 1-4 or Episodes 1-5, and I just wanted to check in case it was an accidental misprint or something like that.

I wanted to say that I REALLY liked how this year, you focused on movies. I think it was wondeful how many there were to choose from to see. I watched 2 this year: "A Silent Voice" (VERY powerful) and "The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl" (there were scenes in it that were ABSOLUTELY hilarious!!).

Also, I know originally on Sun. that "Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz" was slated to be shown, but instead the "Operation: Meteor" OVAs were shown. While I was hoping to get to see "Endless Waltz" again, I was happy to have gotten to see the OVAs, as I'd never seen them before. I thought they were COOL!! :D :D

I hope you will do the same thing for 2020, focus on movies again.

Thank you!! ^_^ ^_^

I'm always a fan of "show more shows but for a shorter amount of time", so even though movies are great, I think that showing a few episodes of a show and then switching to another may appeal to a wider audience (I wouldn't show any less than 2 eps though - 1 hour block)

Expect for premieres and specials though - movies should always be present in those situations - like the City Hunter movie.

I'm not saying DON'T show movies, I'm just more for having more options, as I would think AB provides a good starter to a series, so that the viewer, if interested, can watch it later at home etc. if they liked it. Many series I ended up watching and enjoying later on that I originally saw at AB. Besides, can many folks spare more than an episode (or max 2) at a time because there is so much else to do at the con? Just my 2¢.

That being said, though expensive, the more recent stuff always is desirable, however I have appreciated some of the older titles and/or classics getting some play in the schedule for those that may be new to Anime or just plain never saw anything older than, say, 4 years.

I know individual preferences vary around this vary but with the the vast majority of modern anime coming and staying available via streaming my main goal has become to show people stuff they can't get online or at home. I.e. Anime Boston is expensive, are you going to take time going to something you MIGHT watch at home or some panel/concert/shopping you can't get at home. Some of the stuff we show is an exception because of guests, popularity, needing filler in a room or I feel like it deserves attention but my goal is showing important and relevant anime. It's not a bad idea to show more shows for less time, but i feel like 2 episodes isn't enough.

We had actually considered doing some kind of video rental room, setup with a few TV's and access to licensed parts of the extensive AB screening library instead of a traditional video room (think the manga library but for videos) but the costs and staffing didn't work out for it. I'll keep pushing for it.

I was in communication with Janus films, the rights holder to Tokyo Olympiad- a documentary about the 1964 games. They will let us show the film- the right cost $200.

With the Olympics later in the year, I think it would be great for the convention.

Edit: There is also a romantic comedy set in the games- 'Walk, Don't Run.' It was one of Cary Grant's last films.

Please do not negotiate for or inquire about film rights on Anime Bostons behalf

I will look into the documentary but generally we don't show live action stuff unless it is guest related or anime related, its hard sell to spend money on films without a strong built in audience or exclusivity attached to them
