The Cat-Person phenomenon
Every year, at any one Anime convention, there are hordes of catpeople. Some skinny goth boys, some hyperactive teenage girls, and everywhere in between. Their (sometimes obnoxious) enthusiasm is unrivaled, they ignore most, if not all, rules of polite society and the convention, and they have a massive tendancy to scream and glomp at random.
Perhaps someone could shed some light on how catpeople became synonymous with cons, why there is so many, and why it seems to be a requirement to be loud.

You say this as though it is a bad thing. Cat people(especially girls) in my opinion are nothing short of amazing. They harness an energy that most people wish that they had.
As for their attachment to cons, they are misunderstood in society by most and even shunned by society. They come to cons in the hopes that those there will at most embrace them and at least tolerate them. In addition, they can frolic amongst their own kind.

amen.
I didn't come attempting to be a cat-girl, but I was wearing a fleecy kitty ears hat that I bought at the dealer's room. then my cousin and the anime club from her school found me, and they were all screaming "PET THE KITTY! PET THE KITTY!"
it was....strange. o_O apparently the masses like kitties. or they were just hyper.
but should I be talking....? *stares at avatar/username* *blush* uh, hehe.

On sunday I was a crossplay cat boy (kitty!sasuke if anyone saw me) And I dare say, it was quite fun. I got tons of hugs and giving my leash to poeple was just fun overall too. It's kinda hard to explain why, but just try being a kitty xD. SO MUCH LOVE! <3

it IS anime and cons, is like asking why anime-like characters are at anime cons. Its the only place for anthropormorphics to get away with existing ^^
Some are loud, but those are just ppl wearing "ears", they are having fun ^^

You all assume that all catgirls are of one type... However, just as "normal" (whatever that means) people can differ in personality, catgirls can too! I'm not touching on the subject of catboys right now (excuse the innuendo) because I'm not so interested in dudes, but the same goes for them. I personally prefer the quiet type. They're not like the type of meow for attention 24/7, bounce of the wall, slightly over-aggressive type that is most common. Sure, they're a little harder to find, but I love that kind of personality. With the ears, they really are quite like an easy going kitty!

Every year I've seen catgirls.
But last year and this year, I saw doggirls.
Last year, it was a Hellsing officer.
This year, it was a doggirl maid.
We canines are a minority in anime.

Cat girls are fun...except when they glomp and run around while bumping into you....thats just annoying.
You want to be a catgirl....awesome! But dont ruin others peoples costumes/fun with your crazyness.

So, are cat people just cosplayers with cat ears, or is there more?
Is there a defining line?

Just ears: nah.
ears and a collar: better.
ears, collar, tail: much better.
ears, collar, tail, whiskers: good.
ears, collar, tail, whiskers, paws: very good.
ears, collar, tail, whiskers, paws, eyes/ skimpy clothing: meow.
full fursuit: you've crossed line from catgirl to anthropomorphic female cat.

Well I walked around Con w/ cat ears, a collar, and a tail...While my boyfriend walked around with ears and a collar...Then he used my tail when we went to the 18+ dubbing....
It's just a feeling people like to have when they can walk around with a jinggly bell and get free pets!

Nizzo, you are prepared to do battle with wolves, bears, dragons, tigers, hawks, and other lifeforms with sharp claws, sharp teeth, and who are suffering from a lack of a good meal due to doing con stuff for days?
