A question regarding fake cigarettes

Post by beezy63 »

I just want to ask, is there a policy regarding fake cigarettes for use with cosplay? Both myself and a friend have intentions to cosplay characters who (unfortunately) smoke. I'm aware that Anime Boston is meant to be family friendly convention, and I want to ensure that bringing fake cigarettes wouldn't be going against rules. So, just wondering if doing so would be okay, or if it would be inadvisable. (I also apologize if the answer to my question is openly available somewhere and I failed to locate it)

People use fake cigarettes all the time. Just be prepared to explain yourself a lot, as depending on how well it looks, people might stop you, especially security.

I've gone as Eiri Yuki from Gravitation multiple times as one of my costumes and I always have a fake cigarette on me. My most recent one that looked the best was actually a PEN gotten from Spencer's gifts (my girlfriend picked it up for me) and we glued the cap on. It looked great, BUT it was pretty obvious that it was not real.

90% of the characters I end up cosplaying smoke (never had anyone stop me, especially if there is no actual smoke coming out of the "cigarette"), so bit of advice:

DO NOT go with chocolate cigarettes. They just end up melting everywhere :D

I like using a small piece of wooden dowel painted to look like a cigarette. :)

As others have said, so long as there's no smoke coming from it, you should be fine.

Putting wood and paint in your mouth seems slightly extreme when you can get fake cigarettes at joke shops. I suppose they'd take more abuse without breaking though.

If you want to be fancy about it, Electronic cigarettes (without the tobacco) add a nice touch with the water vapor effects. I had a friend who had one and I believe it's allowed indoors.

We have used these in theaters where I have worked and they look pretty convincing. They even have a little glowy end on them that glows when you blow into it.

You can carry an unlit cigarette, it's just not practical because they'll break easy.

And as far as getting stopped go, I've heard from people, especially those with the fake red foil on the tip, that they got stopped a lot by security.

But I guess it's a YMMV thing.
