The Rules
These are the things that you will probably skip over to get to the sign up info.

1 The Karaoke Contest is not open karaoke.
It's a competition. Stay in the room unless you need to take a break.

2 This will be judged by audience vote, any cheating will not be taken lightly.

3 All contestant music will be provided on MP3, other playable formats, or compatible with a 3.5 jack.
(Song link to Youtube, Spotify or other site preferred to make things smoother)

4 Entrants are responsible for any musical equipment they bring.

5 All songs will be no longer than six minutes in length.

6 Duets are allowed, but only one prize will be awarded to the pair.

8 This is a public performance and people are allowed to record it.

9 No lyrics on stage.

10 HAVE FUN! Show some movement. The audience loves that!

11. You can wear a mask but it is not required.

12. No more than two people can be on stage

13.Entering the audience is allowed

14- Remember that our staff judges votes, count as three votes each.

Side notes:
1 - In order to get to the competition on time, all contestants will be given badges to skip the security line.
2 - If you have to drop out of the registration for any reason. Let me know and the waitlist will be bumped.
3 - Those wishing to waitlist online also need to provide complete information.
4- The online waitlist does not affect the Friday sign-ups. They are considered separate.

FAQS

Do we allow lyrics?
No, there are no lyrics on this stage.

Do we allow non-karaoke versions of songs?
Yes! Non-karaoke versions are fine, but people will judge them accordingly.

Can we make a karaoke version for you?
No, but you can provide us with one.

Why is there an online waiting list?
To cover anyone who drops out before the convention

Random order this year?
Yes, the order in which you register makes no difference to when you get to perform.

Again, no pre-screening?
Yup. Worked well the previous time.

Can I sing anything?
The restrictions are JPOP, KPOP, anime and game music (within reason).
Must also be PG-13 or less content.

Can I change my song?
You can change your song until two days before the convention, then it's locked.

Hey everyone,

So it looks like doing the sign ups this way was too much for the forums to handle which has never happened before. We understand that the issue here is due to the speed of the forum and each person's own computer/internet.

Because of this, everyone who posted here already WILL be in the contest! We will just have less spaces available the day of the convention. There will still be a total of 12 spots + 3 alternates.

Going forward we'll think of some other way of doing this so the speed at which one posts isn't an issue. We're already throwing around ideas and we're open to suggestions.

Sorry about the confusion and frustration here.

EDIT: We also won't be doing a waiting list for the forums this time so if someone drops, we'll open a spot for the Friday sign up instead.

Any additional contest spots you'll have to come by on Friday sign up for the event.

Open Karaoke will going the whole convention when the room is open with the exception of the Karaoke Contest. Feel free to check out the rules here for open karaoke. https://www.animeboston.com/programming/karaoke/

Friday there will only be three spots plus alternates for the Karaoke Contest. Those will become available when the room opens at 9am. While people can line up before or sometimes relax in the room. We won't be opening the desk to sign ups until then.

The karaoke contest online submission thread has closed for this year, the nine preselected are in a list at the top of thread. the rest would be on sign ups at the karaoke desk on Friday. Normally we had always done thread submission only, but we might have to change are system next year do to obvious issues with the submission process. Feel free to sign up Friday if spots are available, you can also sign up there for Open karaoke throughout the weekend.

Hey! I just wanted to follow up a bit with some more info about open karaoke.

We have open karaoke which is open Friday 9am-2am, Saturday 9am-2am and Sunday 10am-3pm. The contest runs on Saturday from 6pm-8pm. The contest sign ups in this thread is currently closed so it's all filled, but we will have 3 guaranteed spots and 3 alternate spots (in case someone drops out) that you can sign up for when doors open. These fill up fast so if you'd like to try for one, you have to be there Friday 9am, especially since we'll have less spots this year due to the forums being glitchy.

If you're not able to sign up for the contest, you can still sing any time during open karaoke! Usually there is not much of a wait right after we open but the list does build up quickly so sometimes there can be a long wait time (1-2 hours even!) for your turn. We have our sign up list in a Google doc so you can check on it even if you aren't in the room (it has been a bit funky in the past though so I'm not sure it's the most reliable when viewing on a phone).

When you come into the karaoke room, we will have some printed papers hanging on the walls and on the tables with a QR code. Just scan the QR code and it will bring you to the sign-up form. Make sure to read the rules since we have some rules on what music is and is not allowed as well as other useful information.

We do also have a hard drive with a huge library of music, but you are not at all limited to the songs in the hard drive. Many people use YouTube, Spotify or we can plug in their phone for the song. (We also WILL have adapters this year for phones that don't have audio jacks! yay)

If you aren't able to use a phone to sign up or it's too much of a hassle, we will also have a laptop with the same form where you can sign up as well!

Since it's all through Google docs, there is also a list of all the sign ups. You'll be able to see where you are in the queue, how many people are before you (we usually estimate about 4-5 minutes per person) and what your number in queue is. You don't have to memorize the number since we always call by the name in the list, it's just helpful for knowing how long until your turn.

I think that's the basics of anything but please feel free to ask us anymore questions.

I just want to put out there I was absolutely blown away by everybody's performances last night. Wanted to come out and congratulate all of you individually though my partner wasn't feeling well and we ended up having to duck out quickly. But seriously, you were all amazing and I felt honored to share the stage with you all! And a huge thank you again Brian and the rest of the staff for putting this on - highlight of my con now for two years in a row!

On a side note - does anyone know if there was a recording made this year by any chance? I saw the staff photographer but I wasn't sure if they were doing video or only photos.

Unfortunately the staff didn't record the contest but I'm sure there will be many wonderful
photos available on the main website. Also maybe somewhere on YouTube someone captured our
amazing performers for later viewing.
