That depends on the style and material used. If you have a specific dress in mind, a picture would help me make a better decision.

The dress is fine. The matching legwarmers are not.

Wait why not legwarmers? haha sorry I just thought that was really random :p

My friend and I are doing Kaito and Miku from Vocaloid Fleeting Moon Flower. Kaito's cosplay is just a kimono like dress but theres a midriff included since it's two separate pieces

looks like this: http://tinyurl.com/2eha3lw

and Miku's just basically a slightly shorter version of a Kimono [sorta Lolita like]

My friend is wondering if the Dr. Stein boots are allowed at the formal ball.

These are what the boots are like.
What if he could have his pants over the boots so it would look like shoes. Would that be an exception?

Uniforms are okay right? Like fictional military ones?

The dress code clearly states that no boots are allowed. I recommend white loafers.

Legwarmers are by nature informal. I was clarifying that the dress in the picture would be fine paired with, say, stockings, but not with the legwarmers it is pictured with.

For the Kaito costume, you would need to replace the shirt with a full-length turtleneck (no midriff), and add a haori jacket. The hakama pants are fine as is.

From what I can see of the Miku costume, it is fine, provided the skirt is at least knee-length. I am guessing that by "lolita-like", you mean like the dress posted above?

Military dress uniforms are fine, but as Hope said, boots are not permitted, even dress boots. I recommend pairing the uniform with appropriate-colored loafers or dress shoes.

I don't think those are even formal hakama pants, but it doesn't really matter since I think I will be wearing Sandplay Kaito instead.

If boots aren't allowed [which if you don't mind me asking, why?]I really don't know what to wear with his costume, because the boots are what give his cosplay an edgy look

this is what he looks like: http://tinyurl.com/39x8rt7 [the guy on the left with blue hair]

any suggestions? I feel like loafers would just be utterly ridiculous looking, sorry. haha

It would help if you could find a picture that includes the boots, so I would have a better idea of what would replace them while fitting in with the overall look.

Boots aren't allowed for several reasons. As Hope has previously posted:

[quote]In the vast majority of cases boots are informal footwear, and while we do recognize that there are some types of dress boots, we remind you that this is a dancing event, and boots are not kind to dancers' feet or dance tile.[/quote]

yeah i KNOW boots aren't allowed haha;)I DO take dance afterall [even though our jazz shoes are basically like bendable sneakers] but I was wondering if you had any other suggestions for TALL shoes, and here this is what he looks like [including the bottom...]

We define boots as any shoe that rises above the ankle, and we don't allow platform shoes. So unfortunatley I don't think we'll be able to help you find "TALL" shoes that meet our dress code. For men we generally recommend flat shoes with long pants, or if you are wearing period style short pants we recommend flat shoes and appropriate tights.

This dress is made from polyester according to the site, which seems like it wouldn't work for a formal event. Is there a fabrics requirement? If so, what kind of thing is allowed?

I wore this exact dress (although hand-made) 2 years ago... I don't think it should be a problem.

Oh girl I wouldn't be caught dead wearing polyester.... :P

But seriously, the rules are based around appearance, not fabrics. Your dress should be fine as long as it meets the other requirements.

Just to make sure, Sebastian from Black Butler would be considered formal, right? I mean, he wears a tailcoat 24/7.

The costume is acceptable; the props however, are not- if you're carrying a fake gun during the day, leave it in your room before the dance!

I would like to start by saying that, although I fully understand that convention staff gets extremely busy in the months before a convention, my email about formal ball attire either was not received or went completely ignored, which becomes very frustrating when you're trying to plan conventions from halfway across the country.

That being said, this is my cosplay, and I simply need to know if it is acceptable.

I apologize if your email was not answered, sometimes my spam filter is overzealous and I don't receive questions.

That said, the outfit is smashing. Love the hat. Leave the sword behind. Don't wear boots.

I didn't receive it either. Did you send it to formal at animeboston.com? In any case if an email goes ignored for more than a week or so feel free to either send another email or send a PM to one of us through the forums.

The sword was not going to be included, as I doubt airport security would appreciate me trying to bring one on a plane.

I used the form on the formal ball page on the main website to contact you over a month ago, hence why I came here.

That dress is fine. I'd recommend skipping the heels unless you can dance in them -- if not, they can often get in the way of less experienced dancers. I'd hate to see a hurt ankle ruin someone's evening :(

Ah yes, I know how it is to have an ankle hurt... (broke it a few years back, it still hurts at times). I plan to wear a low heel and bring my purse flats (those ones that fold up really small! :) )
