Weather in Boston 2015

Post by Elli21486 »

Snow has definitely been the big concern for Boston this year since we are slowly inching to 100" of snow this season (Boston is currently at 99.8"). Anyway, I figured what better way to discuss any concerns regarding weather than to start a new thread, specifically for this year. Especially if we will be traveling through it to attend the convention.

Unless we have an April Fool's Blizzard like we did in '97, most of the snow should be gone. We might not have access to the Pru's Courtyard but aside from that, things should be good to go ^_^

True. I do not think snow will be an issue but rain, wind, heat, and cold all do play a factor in traveling. The fact it is in early April means that any of that can happen in the same week. Example would be it being 60s on Thursday, rainy and windy on Friday, windy and cold on Saturday, and bitterly cold on Sunday. That is how Boston weather can be after all.

Well guys, I think this week is a prime example of how spring can be in Boston. Here is a brief summary of it.

Provided by Intellicast
Monday - Near 40 with cloud and sun dropping to the 10's
Tuesday - Warming to low 30s and staying around there as rain, snow, and ice moves in
Wednesday - In the 40s dropping to 30's with rain and snow
Thursday - In the 30s with snow dropping to 10's.
Friday - Cold day in the 20's and 10's but at least there is sun
Saturday - Temps bounce back to near 40 and full sunshine only to drop to the 20's
Sunday - Back into the 40's we go but rain follows, dropping to 20's
Monday - Remaining in the 40's as rain ends, dropping to 30's

So in this one week, we have snow, ice and rain with temps going from the 10's to the 40's. Anyway, the good new in this though is Saturday to Monday, where rain and 40's are expected. If that stays the same throughout the week, I can see about 25% of the snow already on the ground melting.

The way Boston has been dealing with the snow, I don't think the snow will be much of a concern. Just praying for nice spring weather. The kind that makes waking up on Friday and Saturday morning at the con all that magical. The first thing I do in the mornings is get up, go to Dunkin' Donuts, get a breakfast sandwich, and come back to the hotel room. So beautiful in the morning. I want that again this year please.

Well guys, looks like this coming week will be warm, if you think 40s is warm that is. Next weekend however is trending towards the colder side but things can always change up to 48 hours before the day. Anyway, one of my Twitter subscriptions wrote down the last measurable snow reported in Boston since 1997. Most lies in March while a few lie in April.

Well guys, before I forget, this is what I think will be the weather during Anime Boston this year. Feel free to agree or disagree.

Since Anime Boston lies in early April, I do believe during the days, we will have temperatures in the 40s and possibly low 50s. I do also think there is a slight chance of a day being in the 60s. In the night, 30s sounds reasonable. Weather-wise, I do expect rain or sunshine but snow is also a possibility. If there is snow, I do not think it will happen during the day and will either not stick or melt before morning.

Now for those waiting for the media to start forecasting weather on these days, March 23 is a day to mark. On that day, the media that does a 10-day outlook will start having a forecast for Thursday April 3. Remember though that a 10-day forecast can change as it is only meant as a strong possibility and not an exact forecast when it is that far out. For those traveling, the forecast from the night of Tuesday March 31 and Wednesday April 1 will be the best forecast to decide what to bring with you, whether it is an umbrella, gloves, etc. Anyway, I will most likely do what I have done in the past, posting the media outlook forecast so you guys will only need to look at one place.

Accuweather monthly forecast shows 40s/50s with rain... Lots of rain.

Good news is that the snow is melting--my front yard is down from 9 feet to 3 feet. So if we continue in low 40s and sunshine, we'll have a snow-free Boston by the end of March! :D

Well now, I can post more information on the next storm of concern. As of now, the models are saying a storm is likely to hit Boston on Friday/Saturday and we may need a shovel for this. This, of course, is going to happen after it get's cold again, meaning any snow won't melt on the floor on contact. The weather meteorologist for Boston is not giving any snow amount at this time as the models vary so we will have to wait and see. However, I do have a slim glance of New York meteorologist and here is what they report:
12z GFS(American): 6-12+ inches across NY metro area, Long Island with highest amounts
12z GGEM(Canadian): Rain for most, snow well inland CT/MA
12z Euro(European): Wide area of 3-6+ inches for everyone
As it is still too early to rely on these models, it is best to keep an eye on the weather this weekend.

Well, one weather hobbyist just got a look at a model for Anime Boston weekend and it does not look pretty. Hopefully it changes a lot before then because patterns are following like they did in '97.

Latest information from Weather Channel Online suggests that the upcoming snow may not be so severe as others expect. They're saying no more than an inch or so between Friday and Saturday nights. A look ahead suggests that there will be more rain than snow in the future, although temperatures might not break the 40s range during the day.

The last post I gave was in regards to a very early Euro Model for April 1-2, 2015. It shows a massive storm off the east coast and according to it, was going to be primarily snow. We do have 2 advantages though. First is that it is still 2 weeks away so things can definitely change. The other advantage is that the storm looked a little too south to have a major impact on Boston. This is something we con-goers definitely needs to keep a close eye as many local meteorologist have stated the patterns we have now are eerily similar to 1997, where we had the April Fool's Blizzard.

Just looked at forecast. They are saying chance of rain the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Though it seems to be Thursday morning and then Friday night into Saturday morning.
Which not so good for me, as I need to get to & from my friend's place each con morning and night. And I really don't like walking a 1/2 mile up & down hills in the rain.

As of now, it does look like it will be on the warm side so snow seems really slim right now. However, you never know this time of season. Afterall, we were in the 50's today and we are expecting some snow by Saturday. Anyway, right now, looks like their is a chance of rain on Thursday (60%), Friday(40%), and Saturday(60%). All days seem to have highs in the 40's and lows in the 30's. With that said, definitely bring an umbrella. All this information is based on Intellicast.

However, as a weather hobbyist, I tend to look a little further, specifically with precipitation. In this case, I am personally looking into the weather model (GFS if you want to be precise) and it is showing no rain on Thursday but rain beginning between 2am-8am on Friday. Sorry but the GFS model I can see only goes up to Friday 8am. Temps do look to be in the 30's at that time too.

*We all must not forget that these data are so far ahead that they can change.

I'm not surprised they are calling for rain on that Saturday.
It's April 4th. It's always wet on April 4th.
I know this for it's my Mom's birthday. She told me that she can't remember any of her birthdays where it either rained that day or the day before or after.

Just checked the GFS Model as I can now go into Saturday April 4 at 8pm. Looks like the precipitation has shifted back and looks to start between 2pm on Thursday and finish sometime after 2pm Friday. No precipitation is being modeled for Saturday though.

That is a good call on your part. I will be doing daily update with the weather maps from now until the convention as it is good practice for me for my job before it get's busy. I will also post what officials are forecasting every other day. For now, here is what we have so far:

Information from Intellicast
Thursday: Hi 50s; Lows 40s; Partly Cloudy
Friday: Hi 50s; Lows 40s; Afternoon Showers
Saturday: Hi 50's; Lows 30s; Showers Possible
Sunday: Hi 40's; Lows 30s; Mostly Sunny
Monday: Hi 40s; Lows 30s; Sun and Clouds

Local News
All of the local news agree that it will be on the warm side for snow. However, they all only go up to 7 days, which is Friday. They do agree with the fact it will showers/rain but what is interesting is the temperatures. NECN and WBZ4 both have 60's for Friday with WBZ4 having mid to upper 60s.

Weather Models
Looking at the latest weather models (GFS model), Boston is expected to see precipitation between Tue March 31 (8pm) through Wed April 1 (6am). Another chance of precipitation will happen between Thur April 3 (8pm) through Friday April 4 (6am). That's not it though as another chance will occur between Sat April 5 (2am) through Sat April 5 (8pm). In all honesty now, this is where things get interesting. According to the weather model, the precipitation on Thur-Fri will be rain but the precipitation on Tue-Wed and Sat look to reverse and is now showing snow. Temperatures are also showing 60s on Friday but 30s on Saturday. I will not be able to use another weather model until possibly Tuesday.

It's good to know that NECN's app has a 10 day forecast yet NECN's website only has a 7 day forecast.

There really isn't any difference between the local news and the forecast from Intellicast. Each one says Friday and Saturday will be rainy and Friday will be in the 60s while Saturday in the 40s.

Weather Models
The GFS models state that the precipitation will come in on Thur around 8pm and will last until Friday around 8am. Then the precipitation will return on Sat around 2am and last until Sat around 8pm. It does show that although Thur-Fri will be rain, Sat will start as rain and end as snow. To me, this means the warmest part of the day is the morning and by the look of the temps, that seems to be the case with it being in the 40s by 2am and being in the 30s by 8am and not returning to the 40s all day. I will also mention that starting tomorrow, I will be able to look at the NAM models.

It is the Wednesday before the convention and this is the last chance for people to be checking the weather for last minute packing. So without further ado, here we go.

Information from Intellicast
Thurs: Hi 54; Low 46; Cloudy
Fri: Hi 60; Low 48; Rainy
Sat: Hi 49; Low 32; Rainy
Sun: Hi 46; Low 32; Windy and cloudy

Local News
It look like, despite the rain, will be really nice this weekend. However, WCVB 5 is reporting a chance of a Thunderstorm on Thursday. Other than that, nothing much to say about this weekend.

Weather Models
GFS - GFS models are modeling that the rain will start around 2am Friday and go through 2pm Saturday with the heaviest being around 8pm Friday night. Temperatures also appear to be in line with what is being broadcast but it is still saying it will be cold enough for some kind of snow on Saturday around 2pm if it is still precipitating.

NAM - Nam models now available for Anime Boston. Once again, it is showing rain starting around 2pm Friday and once again, it does look like the rain will stop around 2pm Saturday. Like the GFS Model, NAM is looking like the storm will end with snow.

My opinion
Anime Boston will be warm on Friday. It may not reach the 60 degrees as projected but it will definitely be warm. Those in full body costumes should take that into consideration. Do prepare for the cold on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will most likely be in the 30s by mid-afternoon and Sunday will be windy so wind chill will be a factor. As for the rain, it looks like it is in agreement that Friday morning and Saturday night will be relatively dry. Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon is a different story so prepare for rain, heavy on Friday night.

Anime Boston is officially over and now it is time to analyze the weather. Mind you, I will also analyzing the prediction I did in mid-March as well as My Opinion on the last post I did. Well then, shall we get started.
Posted March 13, 2015

Personally speaking, I am pretty satisfied with my predictions. I came pretty close to what actually happened, with the exception of a few things here and there.

Temperature
Early on in March, I predicted temps will be in the 40s and low 50s. Even that far back, I also predicted there was a slight chance to be in the 60s. With that said, the only day that reached 60s was on Thursday at 61F. On Friday, temps reached as high as 59F. Saturday and Sunday were colder as Saturday only reached 52F while Sunday reached 49F.

As for the drop in temperature, I predicted that "Saturday will most likely be in the 30s by mid-afternoon." To be honest, I was expecting the temperature to drop much sooner (around 8am). Nonetheless, it did drop but it didn't drop as sharp as I expected either and it started dropping around noon. By 12:54pm, temps were at 50F and by 7:54pm, the temp was at 40F. By midnight, temps went as low as 37F.

Precipitation
This is the one category I dreaded the most and am glad I was partially wrong. Friday morning and Saturday night were indeed dry for the most part but lucky for us, the storm stayed south of us throughout the day. In fact, according the Boston METAR, we had some light rain on Friday around 10am through 11am, and light rain around 4pm. The heaviest of the rain came in between 2am and 7am Saturday morning with a reported thunderstorm around 6am.

Wind
This one, I had to go by what the news were reporting and everyone was reporting that the strongest part of the wind will be in the area on Sunday. That, as you already know, was not the case. Yes it was windy on Sunday but it was by far, windier on Saturday. Saturday's reported wind speeds in the upper 20s with gust up to 50mph while Sunday's reported wind speeds in the lower 20s with gust up to 40mph.

Back Bay is always windy.
Boston in the spring is WINDY.

It's why temp can say 60 and yet feel like 40.

I actually got the data from past Anime Boston's and am going through it. Afterwards, I can give a list of records, such as Windiest Anime Boston, Hottest Anime Boston, etc. From a quick glance, looks like the hottest AB had 81F highs (late May AB) and the wettest may be AB2011.

So, I recently had a discussion on past weather at Anime Boston on The Convention + Snow forum. This got me curious so I went searching around. Thanks to Wunderground, I was able to get all the data. Through that data, I found that Anime Boston 2015 broke the past record of strongest winds and strongest gust recorded for Boston during the 3 day convention. Have a look for yourself.
