Anime I want to see at Anime Boston 2011

Hi All,

I understand how much people would like to suggest stuff to see for video programming in 2011. Although it may be a little early, I figure I start a thread. That way we have a good amount of time for suggestions and when the time comes closer, I can get a better feeling of what people would like to see overall. The climate will most definitely change in anime offerings from now until then. I will try to always bring the best we can offer. I hope this last year showed that I have a pretty good feel of the current anime pulse.

On a more personal note, you can be rest assured that I will sneak Bleach into the schedule.. I admit I am a Bleach fan. :)

One thing I was thinking that should be shown, where next year's theme will be music, is "Interstella 5555". :)

Also, and I don't know if there are any actual DVD's that have been released of them, but, I also thought the Vocaloids music videos, esp. the horror ones?

I think Macross would be represented in one form or another considering our theme. Nothing to worry about there.

Has anyone seen Shikabane Hime? It is being released in September by Funimation on dvd, but you can watch it through funimation on youtube and hulu. I like the series alot and would like to see it get some time in 2011. I always try to put my personal preferences in anime in the back seat while making the schedule.

yay~! That's good to know. I know it seems obvious but you never know. How about Chance Pop Session? That's another music oriented one...

OOH!! I love Chance Pop Session!! The series is really cool, and the opening theme song is very catchy.

I came up with another couple of suggestions: how about "Full Moon O Sagashite" and "Perfect Blue"?

Don't forget Gravitation for musically-themed anime. :)

I suppose Beck would be appropriate for the theme, as would K-ON! if it's been put up for license (I doubt AB has any sort of fansub policy on unlicensed stuff aside from "no" due to size).

Our policy on fansubs is no fansubs. Although we all know they are out there, Anime Boston can not legally show them. We fully respect and support our Japanese and North American liscence holders.

Understandable. In general, I've heard about securing showing rights from the Japanese production companies for a particular show/film and using the rights granted by that license to secure a 3rd party translation muxed into stream and playing incidentally along with said show/film. How feasible would such an action be for a con of this size to undertake if they had a desire to do so?

Not very feasible I am afraid. What you would be proposing would be difficult for us as a con to pull off and falls in a sort of gray area. It is better for everyone that we go through everything legitimately rather than try and frankenstein something together. Our con has a very good re pore with the anime industry, so I can guarantee that we will always provide quality video programming. :)

Well, not really. This was simply a thought question. Like the majority of con goers I don't actually watch sit down and anime at cons. Was only interested in the policy question from an "acceptance of language barriers in a global society" point of view.

Thanks for the answers, ShadowAgent; they are insightful.

A suggestion that I might make for programming would be to show all the movies of Satoshi Kon, as a sort of tribute to him. I realize that by the time AB 2011 rolls around, his death will be old news, but it would at least be nice to show a few of his films so more people can be introduced to his works if they're not already familiar with them.

A Satoshi Kon kind of tribute could be a nice idea, and still hold a little relevance to the theme. Good idea.

I would love to see "Ghost in the Shell" played. I know it was on schedual last year, but as far as I know it didn't run properly. A lot of people were waiting for a long while to get it running because of tech malfunction, and I had to leave 40 minutes after I came in (still no GITS), so I don't know if it ran at all. I'd give my full opinion on letting it have a second chance. (:

The other anime I'd suggest is "Now and Then, Here and There". It's certainly not up-beat, in fact quite the opposite, but I think it'd be valuable to see an older and more meaningful anime up on the screens. (:

Thank you!

Going with the music theme, there are a few musical elements in My Bride is a Mermaid. Could be something worth looking into.

If you're looking for "theme" shows, there's Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad and, oddly enough, Bubblegum Crisis/BGC 2040 (Priss and the Replicants, after all...)

Top of my list is Gundam Unicorn Episode 2, seeing as I probably won't be getting a Blu-Ray Player or PS3 any time soon and don't really have any other way to see it.

Any of the big new anime movies coming out in the next year (The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, Hetalia movie, EVA 2.22, Redline, First Squad) would be grea too.

Another suggestion for this year's theme...and I know I'm gonna be put on a spit and roasted for this one, so grab a bottle of barbeque sauce:

Wandaba Style -- A show so unapologetically stupid that I have to file it under "guilty pleasure".

Now, on a more serious note than my last post, I offer two shows I've enjoyed recently that, IMHO, tend to get lost in the shuffle: Pumpkin Scissors and The Wallflower.

Also, I strongly support the Satoshi Kon idea, as well as Now and Then, Here and There and Grave of the Fireflies. To continue with the "anime with a bite" theme going here, I offer:

Serial Experiments Lain
Roujin Z
Petite Cosette
Jin-Roh
Ninja Scroll
(the original feature)
Armitage III, and

The works of Makoto Shinkai -- Voices of a Distant Star, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and The Place Promised in Our Early Days

Not sure if it'll be released in time for AB though.

It'd be sweet if the English dub that supposedly exists of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch could be found, but that is supposedly in TV Asahi limbo.

Dear Funimation: please go through the trouble of licensing, translating and dubbing Macross 7 in the next couple of months.

Nobody's mentioned Key the Metal Idol or Fancy Lala (at least I don't think so), and those are my only real/viable suggestions right now in terms of stuff related to our theme.

Golgo 13 must be shown.

I like the suggestions so far. Keep them coming.

One unfortunate thing in all this is that there are so many great anime out there, but not all of them are licensed or have not had their license renewed. Also there is more and more online streamed anime that can't be shown unless its streamed because that is all the license covers. I walk the line for the attendees.. :) Talks are already in process of bringing a great variety of stuff like I did last year.

Again, keep the requests coming.

With the rise of legally streamed anime, would it be possible to obtain the rights to show anime that is yet to be licensed in the US?
With the rise of legally streamed anime, would it be possible to obtain the rights to show anime that is yet to be licensed in the US?
It really depends on multiple factors. One of the biggest is more a physical factor. Streaming requires alot of bandwidth and cost outisde actually getting permissions.
Some of the places that provide streamed anime can show what they show because they have signed a license that only covers streamed anime and anything else would be a breach of contract. This kind of license is different than an official distribution license. Think of streaming anime as listening to the radio. Radio stations are able to play music all they want, but they can't sell cd's.

Like I said.. the answer is a little more complicated than a simple yes or no. With the rise of anime streaming, there will be some unfortunate things we will not be able to show, but that amount is nothing compared to what we can show. I am not worried, and I am the one arranging all of this stuff.

Albeit that is a very funny anime in a twisted sort of way, but until it is released commercially, it will stay in the land of streaming. At this point, we do not have the capability to stream.

I would like to see the rest of the Kara no Kyoukai (Garden of Sinners) movie series. Movie #5 was screened at Anime Boston 2009, and Aniplex USA is scheduled to release the Blu-Ray boxset of all 8 movies with English subtitles in the US through Rightstuf on Feb. 8, 2011. (Unfortunately, I can't afford the $400 required to collect the series.)

Just to correct myself-- it's all 7 movies of the series on the Blu-Ray set, with one bonus BD and one final chapter created for the set. Rightstuf.com will be selling the Japanese Blu-Ray import set (with an English language translation book) thanks to an arrangement by Aniplex USA. The Japanese Blu-Ray will be released in Japan one week before the US date-- that is why the price is so high.
