Yōkai Art Contest Results!!

As part of the 2013 convention's "Tales of Yōkai" theme, we announced a Yōkai Art Contest with a Grand Prize of a free 2013 Artist's Alley Table. (See this thread for contest announcement: viewtopic.php?t=15633.)

We received many entries from excited artists. Judging was done by our Social Media team, who organized the event. While we could tell all the artists put a lot of time and effort into their entries, in the end we could only pick one Grand Prize Winner.

However, due to the volume of high quality entries, we did decide to add a Runner Up prize. The Runner Up will receive one (1) free convention badge to Anime Boston 2013.

Below you can see the Grand Prize Winner, Runner Up, and a list of selected Honorable Mentions. Click on a thumbnail to view the full size.

To view all submissions to the Yōkai Art Contest, check the album in our Photo Gallery.

We would especially like to thank all the artists for participating. The contest has been a great success and we look forward to doing more events like this in the future.

I'm happy that the winners have been posted! But I'm sad that no one except the winners are even named. I'd love to check out the gallery of whoever did that Kirin.

Additionally, I hope these entries won't be printed or used for promotion ... or really used at all ... WITHOUT CREDIT. I would be completely not alright with either of my works being used for free without credit. If the plan is to print without credit, please remove my works. My works are Myobu and Aosaginohi.

The Hitotsume-kozō is a friend of mine. You can check out her works at: http://pinkplaidrobot.deviantart.com/

An HOPEFULLY the company she co-founded will have a table in the artist's alley this year! Until then, check them out at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/LuckySqui ... 2672216482 and: http://luckysquidstudios.deviantart.com/

Thanks for posting, Blix. I was wondering who did Myobu.

I, too, hope that credit is given where due, and ask that this thread be updated with the artists' names if possible so we can find them online.

Mine are Kuchisake-onna, Miage-nyudo, and Okiku. Yay for Honorable Mentions, and congrats to the winners!

I understand your desire to see all of the Honorable Mentions listed, and I'm sorry about this. It was my decision to post the list of winners and honorable mentions as it currently is. When we started this contest, we included in the rules:
Yokai Art Contest Rules wrote:All entries will be licensed for Anime Boston’s use under a Creative Commons CC BY-SA license. Anime Boston retains the right to modify winning entries (format, size, etc.) for use in our promotional materials. Artists will retain the right to print and sell their work.
While we did state that submitting your work would give Anime Boston the right to use it, we did not state you would also be giving us the right to publish your name. Because some people may not have wanted their real name posted, we did not attribute them. I wouldn't want to presume that every single person was fine with their real name being posted. They might've preferred a studio name or a pseudonym to be used, or not at all.

When I contacted the Grand Prize Winner and Runner Up, prior to the announcement, I specifically asked to also use their name and website. I had wanted to do the same for Honorable Mentions, but we have been under a time crunch to get the announcement made so you all knew before the AA opens tomorrow.

As I said in the contest post, this has been the first time we've done a contest like this. It's been a learning experience for us, and we've realized things we could have or should have done differently. In the future, we'll take better steps to avoid these issues.

That being said, anyone who'd like their name, studio name, and/or website posted above for their Honorable Mention entry, please let me know via PM. I'll update the thread as soon as I'm able to.

Again, I apologize about this and hope you all can understand.

I did the Oni and if you click the image, I put my links down at the bottom of the image. (Habit of mine). I do have to agree with Face though because some of them might not have wanted their names used but at least if people ask for it then they can be put up.

Also that was some tough competition looking at all the entries!

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ The problem is that no attribution is specified. It was my assumption that the name provided would be posted with the piece by default. I guess to you, posting a person's name when they might not want it is the bigger offense when to me, not being credited at all is the bigger offense.

I would like my name added to this forum listing if possible, and my web address.

My biggest concern is that these entries might be printed in the convention guidebook without any credit given OR WORSE, you aren't selling any of this work are you? I don't want that to happen at all. I would love for my work to be in the convention booklet (or not in it, or in something else, or whatever, I don't know what your intentions are for honorable mentions, but I guess I've been assuming you wanted the rights to reproduce the work and a print size file for some reason) I just don't want my work used anywhere in any way without credit. As long as credit is given and I retain all my rights to do anything I want with the image, then I'm fine with the image being used in a not for profit way. Such as in a free flyer or booklet or ticket stub. But it can't be sold. Only given away for free, with my permission, and credit given. Modifications such as overlaid text and design elements and cropping are also fine.

If there's any possibility of no credit being given in the future, or of something being sold, I would like my work removed from this contest.

Can you guarantee for me that credit will always be given and that nothing is being sold?

I can definitely see the problem in that as well. While I agree some people might not like their name put there should at least be some form of credit used. I'm not sure where honorable mentions stand, I think I read something about being put into print in the brochure but since the amount of HRs changed, I'm not sure if that changed either and I would think that at least in those forms that the name of the artist/link would be added in so people could find them. This is also the reason I tend to add my name and links onto my images, especially in forms of publicity. It might be an "eyesore" to some people but it does help to have it.

All the artists can provide their name/links for him and I'm sure they'll edit it with the appropriate information. While my information is on the image itself I would still like to see my name and link posted with the image. I'm pretty positive they would have printed the name/links of the artists with the images in any print they would use these in, I don't see why they wouldn't. I mean how else would you know/find the artist of the piece and possibly find them in the artist alley? Plus the issue of creative commons and all that.

Seeing the time between when the contest ended to when the results were announced it might have been rushed to be put up before the table application and at least with them being up, the artists shown can say, "hey, I would like my name/link posted." Every artist up there deserves the credit of all their hard work definitely.

I can say this with quite some certainty, Anime Boston will NOT be selling any prints of ANY of the submissions. We barely have enough time to run the event let alone set ourselves up with the logistics need to to a sizable run of high quality prints for sale.

It is possible (and i'm not our PR or Pubs department head!) that we may use some of the art for promotional use, however i'm positive we can set it up so that we reach out BEFORE we design such material to get details as to how a given artist would like to be credited (name, studio name or some combination there of), much like how photographers are credited in publications.

Due to the massive quantity and high quality of submissions we are thinking about doing a display of some form (similar to the AB museum last year) so that these pieces can be viewed properly. However if we are able to do such a thing (space and costs must be considered) we WILL reach out to the artists once that decision has been made to work out logistics and preferences. This idea is strictly that, an idea, no concrete plans have been made at this time.

I wanted to first give a big thanks for getting picked, im honored to even be displayed next to such beautiful pieces!!! I hope they don't realize their lapse in judgement in picking mine, so many other lovely pieces. OTL

But i also wanted to quickly say that i can vouch for what Faceman said in regards to giving credit. they contacted me asking if I wanted my real name shown and if there was a website i would like to link prior to having it all go up.

Also the creative commons comment im sorry to say doesn't hold up. When we agreed to submit under the contest terms we waived our rights as copyright holders in the aspects they asked for. Now i do agree that names should be listed for all the pieces, but links are not a must? in fact i was surprised i was going to get linked back to my site, it was a favor from them in my opinion. And if people want to share the site, why not just post it here in the forum? we all have to go here to see the pieces?

I just think most contests work this way where a company or in this case a convention will give a prize in return NOT just for a drawing/painting, but for a hold on partial rights to the piece. thats why you see at the end of the contest descriptions "we reserve rights to..." and so on.

I just feel talking to the animeboston staff, they were very nice and tried to be very conscious of how they proceeded with the contest, and some comments were a little unfair.

LOL, it was more competitive than I thought. Everyone did a great job and there are some GORGEOUS entries up there.

I would definitely like to state that I would be pleased to see credit be given on the first post and mentioned during the con.

My Amefurikozo received an honorable mention~

You can see all 6 entries I did on my tumblr. Out of all of them I liked my three Shinto deities the best.

This all sounds fine.

All I want is my name on my work since I'm not being paid for it. If my name won't be on it, then I want it taken down. I'd love my web address included with any use, but if it won't fit, then that's understandable.

Newsha.
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Read the paragraph about attribution.
viewtopic.php?t=15633 You may review the forum rules here.

Neither they nor I (until now) have designated at all how the work will be attributed. Nothing is said about it in the rules. I'm not saying the staff is mean, and I'm not trying to be mean to the staff. But I'm designating right now how my work will be used -OR- it won't be used at all. I assumed every artist would be credited at least by name. They assumed artists wouldn't want to be credited by name. The issue is now being straitened out. This isn't about right or wrong where we all take sides and point fingers, this is about reaching an agreement.

Thanks Face! I think because of the time crunch things got shuffled around a lot but Face did mention that anyone wanting their name and link could post here or pm it and it would be provided. I'm sure eventually everyone will have their names/links on there and I'm positive they would provide the names and credit of the artists if the images went to print/publish for their brochure or website. I don't think I've seen them use anything without an artist's name on it to be honest.

Newsha, you're really deserved it so congrats again and be proud. I really like that it looks like a sumi-e style ink scroll!

Ama, your chibis were adorable! I really love how they came out, especially the one in the honorable mentions!

Thanks for the explanation, Faceman. It makes sense the way you put it. I've already sent my PM for adding my name and link to mine. :)

Definitely a lot of tough competition this time around. Wow.

I did the watercolor painting of the Basan (fire-breathing chicken). I was very unhappy to see my picture (and others) posted up there without attribution. But it also seems that this issue has been discussed at length already. In any case, my info:
