A Quick Question Concerning Cake

Post by Ryuokami Tora »

It might just have been me, but did anyone else think it was a bit weird that the "Let Them Eat Rei" video was in drama instead of comedy? or maybe even other? It didn't really strike me so much as dramatic as darkly humorous.

And after "Serenade", I think it's clear that the judges weren't above a little black humor... :p

Did you listen to the lyrics of the song when watching the video? The first time I heard the song, i wasn't paying attention the the lyrics, but if you listen to them, they are pretty morbid. Drama seems fitting to me....though it did disturb me when I did see people laughing at it, because that just shown me people were just watching and listening to beat more than what the song's singer was saying.

Overall, I did like the video, and I could say I become a fan of the song a few weeks before AB, but here, take a look at what you think should be in comedy.

The song is funny. It was written to be funny. The whole GAME is funny, in the same dark way the song is.

I saw the video at closing ceremonies, where it won Judge's Choice, but I don't think it should have been filed under Drama.

I know the lyrics to the song. It does seem pretty morbid at first, but that's the point of satire and dark comedy. Later the absurdity and what not kicks in. I actually just got the video from AMVs.org and the creator was wondering the same thing.

Oh, well. I guess even Modest Proposals can be taken too seriously sometimes... ;)

I think it could go either way, but...
An obviously-humorous non-dramatic video placed into the "drama" category by the hapless Anime Boston AMV contest judges.
The editor thinks it's comedy.
And, to be fair, it wasn't the judges who put it in that category.

Here's what happened: the editor submitted to Anime Boston under no specific category and told Adam to put it where it fits, so it went to the judges. The thing is, out of the 11 judges who prescreened videos, only 1 had played Portal (or so I've been told), so nobody got the joke and it went into Drama.

So yeah, bad call by the judges.

Well, you could argue it was a bad call by me. I'm the one who put it in the Drama category, because the creator didn't specify. However, I maintain that it wasn't funny. I have never played portal, so it seemed like a very interesting, but very serious and morbid video. So Drama it was.

The Cake is a Lie...

Anywho, a lot of the peanut gallery in the balcony on Fri. got the joke. Overall, quite a good video IMO.

As Adam already said, it was filed under Drama before the prescreeners saw it. However, even having played portal (& I thought the video was hilarious,) I still would have argued to keep it in drama. I wouldn't have counted on more than 50% of the crowd to have played portal anyway (and therefore wouldn't have gotten the jokes)

i've never played portal, nor was i aware it was a portal song till sunday and i still thought it was funny when i saw it on friday O.o so i don't think playing the game had much to do with it. alone the "questionable" scene with the line about the cake being sweet and moist had me in stiches.
though i supose it's not worth discussing, as a judge i have no idea where i would of put this. maybe upbeat? cause i've always viewed it as a "other" catogory, a place you put videos that don't fit elsewhere.

You can already download [strike]Cake[/strike] Portal standalone on a PC w/ Steam. One of the best $20 I spent in a long time.

I've never played Portal and also still thought it was funny. It seemed to be entirely darkly humorous and ironic.

I look forward to playing Portal though!

I have never played Portal and while I didn't really get all the jokes in the video because of that I did hear the lyrics (for the most part) and while I thought the video was amusing, I thought it was one of the creepiest amvs I have seen in a while. It truly rivaled any horror amv I have seen. To see Rei smile while singing it was just disturbing.
