AMV rippers/file formats

I hope this isnt a repeat thread but does anyone know of a good ripper software/what is the best format to put the video footage in?

I recently ripped a DVD using magic DVD ripper and the quality was CRAP. could it be a file format issue or is the program just stupid like that?

I use Plato DVD ripper to rip my DVDs, it's free and it doesn't have any catches. You can find it on download.com
