:o Wow, that's incredibly surprising for Comedy. I was expecting it to be as strong as it was last year... maybe not so much. I guess all 6 videos automatically get in?

Good to see Romance getting a little more love.

I was surprised by comedy as well. And yes, all six videos automatically made it in.

Romance was very strong this year.
Fun/Upbeat/Other was also very strong.
Drama and Action were solid this year.

YAY!!!! Roydor is a Go! *dances*
I was right, wasn't I, Adam? About the last bit "making" the video? Hehe... although I was concerned about that one making the finals, so... what a relief.

That still leaves 72 videos to watch.
Even at just 3 minutes per, that's over 3.5 hours of AMVs. That's longer than watching all of FLCL.

Yet that pales in comparison to other AMV contests - Otakon in its heyday got over 200 entries. AWA gets something like 500+ entries into Expo every year and 100 or so in Pro.

AWA treats it's editors a lot better than Otakon does.

Actually, you can submit as many videos as you want to Expo, I believe the limit for Pro and Masters (now back!) is one.

And yeah, Otakon's contest has been mismanaged ever since Matt Pyson stepped down as coordinator, which is why they went from 200 entries (in '03 and '04) to about 60 entries (last year). AWA doesn't just host a contest - they have a Video Art Track dedicated to AMVs the entire weekend, so a lot goes into it.

Wow, it's shocking how little comedy there was. Maybe it was just a response to last year, and people didn't want to enter a video into such a popular category.

BTW, how many AMVs are selected out of each category? I originally thought it was five, but I guess I'm wrong. O.o

6 videos per category for a total of 30 vids.

Here's the thing about comedy - it's hard to make a good comedy video. Being able to execute a funny concept is a skill that a lot of people don't have, and in the end it's much easier to make, say, an Action or Drama video than it is to make a Comedy.

Most conventions have strong comedy categories not because so many people make them, but because so few people make them that those few are, more often than not, people who are good at it.

That said, the fact that only 6 vids were submitted is surprising, yes. But I've seen two of them and I already know which is going to win, so I look forward to the category (especially without the pressure that came from being in it last year).

*Laughs* It's true. I guess you don't really know until the voting. But you are right: It's one thing to create a good Drama, action or other video, but making the audience crack up is a whole different level. I've tried my stab at comedy and well, it's tough. ^^;; I am a very big fan of your work Dokool, Bashar Of The Ages, and Kiarrens. Congratulations! I knew you'd make it. My boyfriend made it this year as well! I'm getting so anxious to see your vids! Good luck everyone. <3

Well, from what I see Melichan, you have quite the fan base for your comedy videos. Trust me, all the subscribers, favoriters, and viewers cannot be wrong. ;) Also, good luck to your boyfriend. Good luck to you as well. ^_^ If I am not mistaken, your category is still in the running, so I am hoping you make it. Dang... looks like I didn't make it... and I tried so hard too.... drama must have had a lot of competition this year. I'm interested to see the finalists to see what I was up against.

2010 - Older Guy Other

There was 20 videos in Drama, excluding the disqualified ones. I do think Drama is going to be tight this year, I have a feeling.

If Drama is tight it's because there won't be a standout entry and the category will be rooted in mediocrity - or at least 'well, that was nice'-ity but nothing spectacular. Same as usual - AB has traditionally received solid Drama entries but the category has never been as shock-and-awe-worthy as others, which inherently stems from the fact that Drama videos, even when they are good, are more often than not pretty boring, especially when they cross the magic 4-minute threshold (which most do).

My money's on Action to be the hit category this year, Romance to finally be a strong category, Fun/Upbeat to be the new comedy, and Comedy to have a couple good entries and otherwise underwhelm.

I didn't say Drama will be spectacular. All I ment by that is the final results of the voting, I think they are going to be neck and neck most of the way. Same with FUO and Action. I suppose we will see though.

Drama, there has only been maybe one I have liked from each year tops. Last years videos were...ok to me, but good nevertheless.

Comedy, I think it will just be fine. The last two years i was here, comedy was good but only one video of the two years did even get a smile out of me, but none made me actually laugh. Two of the entrants stated they really didn't put much into their comedy videos, or just threw them in there for fun. Basically, if they are not good videos, they got in anyways, so I am not overly expecting anything from it again this year.

Heh... My vid took me about 3 days, I think, but then it's under a minute long. I assure you that I did do a great deal of work on the lipsyncing (going so far as the photoshop mask well... most of it) and that fans of homestarrunner will probably get a good laugh out of it, but those who don't know HSR will probably just scratch their heads and go, "well... that was weird..."

Ah, yes, I have never been to HSR. Might check it out to get a heads up on what will be what, because trust me, I HAVE scratched my head at most of the passed comedy videos, so knowing in advance might make me see light upon it.

Like I think, Last years, I could say were great, but I myself am...not too pleasable, hell, I fail to please myself with my videos and things...my friend calls me the Simon Cowell of AMVs. Haha.
