PG-13 Standards?

Post by hg revolution »

First off, congrats to all the AMV finalists and winners this year; you did good work.

Now, every now and then there's a video in the contest that tends to push the PG-13 standards, usually stuff with graphic violence. This year, the video which I'm wondering about the PG-13 standard on was the Best Comedy winner, YTMND AMV: FAD Entertainment System. Nothing in the video is graphic, but one of the various bits in the video contains Detroit Metal City clips set to audio from that "but I poop from there" porn scene. I was pretty shocked to see such sexually explicit and bake a cake-suggesting content making it into the competition, especially after having one of my submissions disqualified for a similar sort of cringe humor, albeit in a larger quantity (also for what it's worth, my disqualified video frankly wasn't as good as this one or the other comedy finalists so it shouldn't have gotten in even if it wasn't disqualified, but if you're rating stuff for content as opposed to quality then it seems weird to let a video with R-rated content pass as PG-13 just because it's higher quality).

I guess I'm just want clarification on what the standards are here. I also sort of understand given that there's the PG-13 contest and the hentai contest and no real R-rated middle ground at the con if you're more willing to let iffy content slide if you like the video well enough, though I do wonder if in those cases maybe an extra content warning might be useful (like how network TV will put up a "viewer discretion advised" for particularly gory or perverse episodes of shows they still rate TV-14 but definitely exceed the content of normal TV-14 episodes).

The PG 13 rating is by nature a little vague. It allows us flexibility to take videos on a case by case basis. In this particular case, there was nothing graphic shown, and it was one small segment of a long video. Had it been any more than what it was though, then it would have been DQ'd.
