AB 2014 Finalist Emails have been sent

Post by Elder_God »

Congratulations to everyone who made it in, both returning creators and first time in the contest creators.

Also congratulations and my sincere thanks to everyone who submitted videos. They were great as always.

Now for those who want the numbers:

Drama: 38 Entries, 7 watermark DQ's
Action: 34 Entries, 7 watermark DQ's
Romance: 22 Entries, 5 watermark DQ's
Fun/Upbeat: 27 Entries, 7 watermark DQ's
Other: 20 Entries, 1 watermark DQ
Comedy: 15 Videos, 1 DQ for Inappropriate Content

Total Entries: 156
Total DQ's: 28

Several videos DQ'd for watermarks were very good, and they were well hidden, but still got caught by the eagle eyed prescreeners, so were regretfully DQ'd. Please understand that we really do mean no watermarks. It hurt to DQ some of those videos.

Neither of my comedy videos got in (I think one of mine might have been DQed? I'm thinking the one that featured Squidward might have been a bit much; the concept was something that could have been done for the HMV contest but due to lack of certainty of that contest's existence given the lack of entries last year as well as my lack of interest in doing the research I stuck with ecchi clips plus one non-pornographic clip from an infamous hentai hoping I could squeeze in but I guess it didn't).

Maybe my other video would have had a better chance in the romance category? It was one of those videos that could have gone either way. Ah well. Can't wait to see the finalists and you can always see mine at the Overflow or on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2lTsoWac0k

I'm gonna throw this out there, but as someone who spent the last two hours freaking out cause she thought she didn't get into comedy with a video she spent 8 months on and seemed to be a shu- in for cthe catagory, who then later learns that she is ACTUALLY a Finalist in comedy -- the staff just forgot to send her an email...

But I think it might be a good idea to start posting a finalist list as well as emails.

I agree with this so much. If you only send emails individually one at a time, you increase the chance for human error substantially. The result of tonight is evidence of that. I know you want to keep the contest a mystery as much as possible, but like... what if Vivifx hadn't messaged you to double check on her entry? Would she have had to go the intervening month without knowing she actually made the contest? What if there are others who were skipped like her? I think the finalist list should be posted. Not the qualifying videos, necessarily, but each editor and the respective category.

I politely disagree. There are times when the surprise of an amv and its respective editor that if announced before the showing could ruin an amazing surprise.

There are several editors whom if the community at large knew would make the finalists list would automatically cause concern for the other contestants and some angst and drama, TomTheFish come to mind immediately.

While it is possible for Adam and his team to miss an email, I know that it is not malicious. Doing things by hand while potentially error prone also ensures that it is done properly and without haste and potentially without a massive machine error that could cause even MORE dramu and heart ache.

You may say "it's fine" but when you put 8 months of work into something that is assuredly a top contender for an award, and it doesn't make the cut for finalists, only to find out two hours later that you DID make it and the email just didn't go out... that's a hell of a lot of emotional turmoil to be put through needlessly. Adam definitely is not the bad guy here, it was a simple human error. I just think that this exemplifies a flaw in the current system.

I understand the need for keeping anonymity and making the contest special... AWA does the same thing! Here's a compromise that may make everyone happy: instead of keeping everything completely anonymous, allow the option for editors to check something off in the submission process that says "reveal my name publicly if I make finalists." This will let people remain anonymous if they so choose up to the convention, while people like Vivifx and me, who just want to know if we made it in, can find that out in a glance and not wonder if an email got misplaced.

Hi! This is my first time participating in the AMV Contest, and I just want to say I'm very pleased and surprised to have made it as a Drama Finalist. Thank you!

Although to be honest, of my two submissions I had expected my entry in the "Other" category to have a much higher chance of getting in (even though it only took me two days to make as opposed to months for the first one haha). I can think of a few reasons why it didn't though.

Congratulations to everyone who entered, and I look forward to competing!

I am? I definitely didn't intend to. I'm not demanding these changes be made or anything, I'm just offering a suggestion. Maybe I should have used emoji to soften the blow? Really, I know the staff does a lot of great work and I appreciate that, I'm not trying to undermine anything about that.

Two things. First being, it was just a joke. Second being, I've been in a similar slide like in my thread there. I had "both" of my videos, after working months on, absolutely die on me in an accident at work with my laptop, completely rendering it dead, HDD included, and had to rush hide and hair the last month to, buy a new laptop, put both videos back together from scratch, and on top of it, struggle with the hell that my graphics drivers have been giving me lately.... I was worried I'd even make it to having a video presentable in time after all that. I think I deserve to joke some. :|

Nah, I think you sounded fine. From a third party's (?) perspective.

I agree that a public finalist list would be a good idea, just because I saw firsthand how people were freaking out about emails and "what's going out when," etc, last night. Maybe do a group PM to everyone who entered? Or a group email of the finalists? That way there's still the anonymity for the public audience, but we don't have any issues of emails not being sent out, etc.
I said "etc" a lot in here.

Anyway, yeah, just tossing out ideas~ I don't think anyone's making demands at Adam, because we truly do appreciate all of his hard work. Especially at 7 days a week! D; Yeesh.

I want to make it clear I'm not upset or demanding change here... I am honestly happy to get in. I will admit though it was quite a frustrating and stressful experience but that's done with so I'm over that.

I think what irriadin proposes is reasonable. Boston is one of the few conventions that doesn't post their finalist list publically, and this does not have to change -- but I do think there could be a better system than singular emails. If only so Adam doesn't have to send out a ton of emails!

It is very very stressful too when you have other people getting emails left and right and you are still waiting for yours. If people are posting on the forum about their received emails it isn't really that anonymous.

And if some editors are trying to pull some big anonymous surprise then a check box would work for that definitely.

Anyway just food for thought. In my opinion, Anime Boston is one of the better run contests and personally one of my favorites to attend. That's part of the reason I didn't send my video to AWA so it could premiere here! I don't want this to become a whole thing.

....drama

I've never got the opportunity to be the person that posts that before :D

But on a serious note, I agree that sending out individual e-mails isn't a good way to handle things. It leaves the door open for people to always question if their e-mail was sent to the wrong address, forgot to be sent entirely, or simply lost in the interwebs. I think that a great alternative would be to also post a list on the forums of which editors made finals alongside their number of vids in the finals. Everything will still be anonymous because you're not actually revealing who is competing in which category. For Example:

Editor Name / Number of videos in finals
Editor ABC (1)
Editor DEF (2)
Editor EFG (2)
Editor HIJ (1)
Anonymous Editor 008 (1)

You could then send out individual e-mails to reveal to the editors which of their videos made finals in which category. I fell that this is a great compromise that will satisfy everyone.

Never suggested you were demanding anything, the phrase "something that is assuredly a top contender for an award" just reeks of entitlement / arrogance - it implies everyone isn't entitled to the same level of courtesy or doesn't have the right to be equally upset at something like that happening to them.

Though at the same time, he's not talking about his video--he's talking about someone else's. So I think he's just projecting his opinion of the video into the conversation.

I see what you're talking about, but I don't think that's how he meant it~

I understand people want a change in the system for various reasons but this would be better as suggestion
sent to Adam. Also lets try to steer away from the name calling & drama and have some fun okay.

I admit, I am a little saddened that I didn't make the finals. It's my first time competing and frankly I am pleased with the video I made. I had so much trouble getting the footage between being sick, my friend who was ripping it for me originally getting sick and then having to work so I never saw her, to ripping it myself only to having it rip to a file format I never saw before and having to convert 36 episodes into AVIs so WMM2 would read it and then have that not work cause it converted to a certain AVI it wouldn't read properly and crash. As a last resort I used Movie Maker from Windows 7 and learned a lot in such a short period of time. A video I should have been making over at least 2-3 months I had to make in 4 days or so with the original deadline. And I am glad I can say I did it. I poured everything into it and it's the first time in any contest I have entered that I have felt happy. Happy that I tried and happy with what I have done. It just means I need to work just as hard over time to perfect it and hopefully one day make it to that pretty big screen for the finals. Thank you Anime Boston for giving me this experience and congrats to those who made it to the finals! I wish you luck and can't wait to see your works of hard labor and love at the con! <3

It's rare someone would make the finals on their first year. Simple thing to do is practice, practice, practice. Attend the AMV contest, watch the videos, and learn new ideas visually. Submit to other cons. Watch tutorials. Improve yourself. I'm sure you can do it and hope to see a video on the big screen soon. :)

Yes, please don't be discouraged! I got turned down two years in a row before my videos started making it into the contest, and even since then I have had many videos turned down along the way, and I don't think there's anyone here who can't say the same. Also just because you didn't get in doesn't mean the video wasn't good, because there are often more qualified videos than there are spots in the contest. But keep practicing and I'm sure you can do it! Plus your video will be played in one of the overflow screenings so you can still see it at the convention if you want. :)

Thanks for the kind words, it really means a lot. And I am anything but discouraged, if anything it has fueled me more to push harder and ya know, manage my time better now knowing what my ripper program does and such lol. The fact that I can watch my video over and over again without being disgusted with it says something to me about how it was made. I hadn't made an AMV in 4 some odd years or something like that and to make one in such a short amount of time that I can honestly beam with pride at is nothing short of a miracle for me. And you're right, I can view it in one of the overflow to see it actually play at a convention. My BF just doesn't know that we will be doing so yet! lol -.^

As someone who somehow managed to make it in on her first try, I can relate and sympathize. I was incredibly surprised and honored that my video was chosen as a Drama finalist out of so many entries - especially since of my two submissions it was the one I poured a lot more effort and heart into and was afraid I wouldn't finish it in time. Even though I ended up completing it with a couple weeks to spare so I threw together a last-minute thing for fun, part of the latter was intentionally pandering to the audience, so in a way it's sorta satisfying that hard work and sentiment was acknowledged over simply aiming to please the crowd. I fully expected rejection for my first project instead, if not both.

I've been making AMVs on and off for several years, so I'm not exactly a stranger to the medium. To compete against top editors though, some of whose work originally influenced me to become serious about videomaking, is a dream come true. I've always wanted to try entering the Contest but didn't have the space for high-quality clips or editing programs. (Though I know from experience it is definitely possible to make appealing AMVs on WMM, so don't give up!) Having gotten a new computer with a much larger HD and a better video editor over the summer, I was eager to finally give the Contest a go. But between barely having time to do other things due to school, let alone figure out how to use the software, it's amazing I even managed to produce something that could be considered acceptable haha. It was fun feeling my way around the new effects and options though, and I learned a lot through the process that will hopefully help me improve and work a lot faster in the future. I already have ideas for what I'm going to do next year.

On a related note, one of the nice things about AB is that it challenges me to try things I never would have before, as well as take into consideration how the public will respond - since not everyone will be familiar with the series. (I have to thank my friends and family for helping gauge how hard it is to convey the story of my video - though I'm still not sure how many people will "get it" even after all the adjustments I made. ^^; ) I put a lot of care into getting it "just right", and even now I lament that the version I sent in has a small mistake (at least in my eyes). But the other advantage is that having a deadline forces me to follow through and finish what I set out to do, even if it's not perfect. It feels great since it's been forever since I've done a full video, and have a huge backlog of partial projects – as I’m sure many of us do.

Anyway, I just want to give kudos to you for not getting discouraged, you should be proud of what you’ve accomplished. And you’re certainly not alone, I’m sure there are many who have had a similar experience – including myself. I know there are always a lot of good entries that end up in the Overflow. (Aside: One of last year's actually/admittedly inspired my main entry a bit since it's a shame the former didn't get in, so I also wanted to help represent the show by putting together an idea I've had since it first aired. ...Ironically my second video was a completely original concept I came up with on the spot whilst talking to a friend, even though I later found out last year's Comedy winner made the same reference - though mine took it further. XP Perhaps part of the reason it was rejected.) I just happened to be "lucky" I guess. Heck, my second video will be there too (although it's already up on YT). Keep practicing and trying, and maybe we'll compete against each other on the big screen someday! ^.^

P.S. Thanks for the congrats, and thank you to the AB staff as well for hosting this awesome event. <3 Looking forward to seeing everyone else's entries!

Neglected to mention, regarding the HMV contest, I have no info on it (nor am I involved with organizing it) but I do know it will be running as a part of a much grander HMV event this year. Adam will have to clarify, but I think the deadline for it has not passed yet.

As more time passes I'm learning that making finals for AB seems to be a big deal. I really don't remember ever entering before (according to my records) so I feel very honored to have made finals. :) I'm not taking this lightly anymore. I wish I could attend.

Congrats. Like others have said, AB tends to be one of the better run AMV contests. Personally for me, it's my hometown con, so that's why it is "big" to me.

Anywho, congrats on making the finals. What category?

Upbeat. My video is more sentimental in my opinion, but it's not romantic or really dramatic so I figured upbeat was my best bet. :P

Mine's not so "upbeat" as it is "fun" to be honest. That's why I placed mine there. Either way, if you made it, I am sure it will be fine. Although, I AM curious how someone could make a sentimental video into a fun and upbeat one. I look forward to it. :)

I'd say yes, you should be, but that's just me. Last year they just turned the upload form back on for it after it came down for the regular contest.

If the deadline for the HMV contest has not passed yet, I'll bust my butt this weekend to submit something. Especially if it will be such a big event this year, I'd really like to be a part of it.

I've just joined so I could reply here. Anime Boston is not normally on my radar on which conventions I get to go to every year, but various things (JAM Project, AoT English dub premiere, etc.) caused me to take the plunge and send in my entry to see what happens.

It really irks me that I did not receive any further correspondence other than "Your entry was accepted, good luck!". I never got anything after that. Because the finalist list is not published anywhere publicly, at least people who got the precious "happy" email know that they got in. And those that didn't basically fell off the face of the earth.

I hold out very slim hope that my notification got lost in the email, but at this point, since I didn't get the "happy" email, or any other email for that matter, that I didn't make the cut. I think it would be a lot more courteous if you replied to ALL entrants, whether they made the cut or not. I won't mind getting the "unhappy" email, but at least I should have been notified one way or the other whether I made it in or not. It really is simple common courtesy not to leave people hanging on whether they made the cut or not.

Despite my not making the finals ostensibly, at least I am comforted that I won't have to wait until the 22nd century for certain states to join the 21st century. Good luck to everybody.

Well to all the finalist, congrats. As a viewer and voter, I am sure to be amused to see them on the big screen. It does sadden me though that I will be missing Friday night but at least I have Saturday morning. (Hope the times don't change)
