Why do you cosplay?

You don't need to be in costume to post in this cosplay forum... but sometimes it helps.

I cosplay for a lot of reasons, but I'll try to boil it down to a few.

1. I love how strong I feel when I'm being a character that I love. I don't LARP (though I wouldn't be opposed), but just pretending to be someone else gives me a rush. I've always loved acting and it's very similar.
2. Even if nobody recognizes my character, I love the thrill of having created something myself. Even if the only thing I did was piece together pieces I bought at a thrift store, it's still something I created for myself, and I'm proud of that.
3. How fun is it to walk through Boston turning heads? :)

I hope that helps - mind sharing the presentation with us when you're finished?

That is a difficult question, and I have a couple answers to it.

1) It lets me explore styles of dress which I find beautiful and interesting that I could not in everyday life. Honestly, how often do you see guys( or even girls for that matter) in hoop skirts walking around anywhere (that doesn't have an anime or other costume based convention occurring during that time frame).

2) It provides me with a challenge that is both non-trivial, and results in me learning potentially useful skills in some fashion. I really enjoy looking at something and breaking it down into its components, and trying to figure out if it is real world viable, and if not directly, how could I simulate it such that people don't realize it doesn't work exactly as expected.

Lastly, the small spontaneous interactions that sometimes show up while you're in costume. These are precious moments where you connect with someone else in some strange unexpected way through your wearing of a costume.

I have a couple reasons.

When I cosplay for fun (i.e. for cons), I do it because I love to be able to wear and show off something that I created and I'm proud of, as I make all of my cosplays. I'm a pretty reserved and shy person, and being in front of cameras so often in cosplay has helped me ''come out of my shell," so to speak.

But most importantly, for me, I'm very active in a couple charity cosplay groups in the area (Boston Super Heroes and Cosplayers for a Cause), and will soon be joining some of the larger, international charity groups (501st Legion and the Rebel Legion). We do all sorts of charitable events, from visits to children in hospitals to cancer fundraisers to holiday events for veterans and low-income families, parades, etc etc. So I cosplay to help make a difference in the community and to bring some happiness and smiles to people who may be going through a difficult time. It's really a great feeling to have, say, a child with cancer forget about reality for a little while when they get to meet their favorite superhero or princess or a stromtrooper or what have you. Something as simple as that an have a huge impact on someone experiencing a dark time in their life and it's really wonderful to be a part of that experience.

Here are my reasons;

1. It's a chance for me to dress up in costume. Because of my faith, I don't want to celebrate Halloween, and there's not a lot of social opportunities for me to dress in costume and have fun being in a costume. SO, cosplaying and convention going is my outlet.

2. I get to try as best I can to accurately portray a character from a show or manga or video game that I love. And it challenges to create and execute a replica of that character's outfit. It's fun seeing it in real life and pretending for a moment to act as those characters. ^_^

3. It's a hobby I share with my friends.

4. It's fun to meet people who are interested in the same concept and work off each other when we meet.

5. It's fun being a little unique, even if you're in a convention with people doing the same thing. I'm copslaying usually as obscure characters that not a lot of people dress up as or recognize. And definitely thrilling to get looks from people outside of the convention atmosphere.

I cosplay because: 1) It is fun. 2) I find it rewarding, even if only a few people recognize the character I'm being. 3) I get to step outside myself. 4) I feel encouraged to not only look like the characters but to also get inside their heads. Portray them both inside and outside. Any success I garner herein is a big confidence booster. 5) I have made many friends through our shared interest in cosplay. 6) It serves as a creative outlet. 7) It encourages me to be resourceful by getting and making more out of common items (e.g. cardboard).

The reason I cosplay was initially because it's fun and I enjoy doing it, but nowadays it also helps with my mental health. I'm very self-depreciating due to my depression, and constantly believe that I'm undesirable or unwanted or useless. But because of cosplay, and particularly the cosplay events in Anime Boston, I get all this attention, admiration, and validation as well as a purpose through entertaining the audience through my acting in cosplay events. When I'm in cosplay, I don't have to be myself, but I can be a fictional character instead. People at cons don't judge or even know who you are behind that costume or what you've done. They just see a fellow fan who shares the same hobbies and interests and a potential friend. I really like that.
