The most politically incorrect panel ever?

Post by Haru »

Nagi no Asukara was pitched as a moe Romeo and Juliet love story about a girl from a village from beneath the sea who falls in love with a boy she meets who lives on the surface. While I wont deny that there is a love story aspect to the series, I honestly feel there is more to this show than "boy meets mermaid".

A detailed deconstruction and analysis of the world in Nagi no Asukara reveals a society on the verge of collapse, struggling with the following social issues:
Racial slurs and insults
Hate crimes
Racial profiling
Violence against women
Inter-racial dating
Inter-racial marriage
Laws that prohibit inter-racial relationships
Mixed race children
Maintaining a racially pure bloodline
Racist characters
Bigoted characters

If you are easily offended, or offended by any of these topics, then this panel is NOT FOR YOU however, if you are willing to consider the darker and more racist aspects of what many consider to be just another moe-blob show, and how anime can reflect our real life then this presentation is not to be missed.

Moe Moe Racism? Social Issues in Nagi no Asukara is scheduled for Saturday 3/26 9:30pm - 11:00pm in the Sheraton Fens. This panel is rated 18+ for adult themes, racist content, and harsh language. NO PORN WILL BE SHOWN! Time permitting, a questions and comment session will follow the presentation, which is a rarity I seldom allow in my programing.

Well, I love Lull in the Sea, but I'll definately try to see if I can make it to your panel that looks deeper into it.

Does the series itself examine these topics, or does it mostly try to avoid them? Trying to figure out if this is something I'd be interested in.

Some of the issues on the list I posted are a much larger driving force than others, but they all show up in video clips I will be showing as part of the panel. They are all part of the series, but some do play a larger role than others. The "racial tensions" as I call them are something the series does not shy away from and they really are what drive the early episodes.

My goal with the panel is to 1) Introduce people to the series because I think it overall is a really good show, and 2) more importantly offer up a new way to look at it when watching it since, as I mention it was pitched as a love story and I think it can be viewed as way more than that

As stated before, I have a hour and a half time slot for this presentation, so I will play several short clips from the series highlighting key points that I want to make, so everyone will be able to see and judge for themselves if I'm on to something, or just making up BS.
