Anime Parodies

Post by hg revolution »

I'm thinking of doing a panel on anime parodies and references in Western media. Anything I should look into about including? Obviously I'm going to have to cover MEGAS XLR and Teen Titans, as well as Adult Swim's continued ribbing of anime fandom (anyone else remember Perfect Hair Forever?), some of the earlier anime homages (the Astro Boy episode of Freakazoid and the Speed Racer episode of Dexter's Lab), some examples of lazy/stereotypical parody (thinking of GTA4's tentacle porn/magical girl show as an example), and anything notable bizarre (Fullmetal Alchemist being discussed on The OC? Wha?).

There is also the Robot Chicken reference skit to Sailor Moon. :)

You could bring up Stinkoman from Homestar Runner.

And the Dragon Ball Z Christmas one.

The South Park Chimpokomon episode was a superb parody of Pokemon for the time.

There was a season-long show on Adult Swim called Sym-Bionic Titan that was inspired by a lot of mecha anime.

And then there's the AB Staff favorite, "J-Pop America Fun Time Now!" skit from SNL.

Could include the anime-style scene in Kill Bill, as well as the anime work in the Matrix OVA stuff, Power Puff Girls. Maybe branch out to historically western franchises that have expanded to anime versions even, like Marvel.

There was an anime parody on the Clerks animated TV series. Well, it was more of a Korean animation parody, but since most anime is actually created in Korea, it still stands.

Most American animation is done in Korea as well.

If you think about it, wouldn't Avatar: The Last Airbender also be included in this particular topic.

Also, you can put the "Welcome to Tokyo" from Disney's Pheneas and Ferb in here, which pays homage to Caramelldansen, Ganguro Girls, and Llevan Polka (referencing Orihime from the Bleach anime and/or Hatsune Miku from the Vocaloid series.)

Last but not least is of course Totoro making a cameo appearance in Pixar's Toy Story 3.

I've seen at least one 'Speed Racer' parody in a short at one of the Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted animation festival.

The show "Titan Maximum" from Adult swim is very anime-inspired/related. It's like a vulgar, crass version of Voltron. Let's see...other parodies/references: High High Puffy Ami Yumi, Ultimate Spider-man, Kill Bill, then you got all those Marvel Anime like X-men, Blade and Iron Man.

So I take it people enjoyed the panel, given all the laughs (though maybe including Soulja Boy "Anime" was too torturous...). What did people think?

Oh, and here's the Youtube link to Bard Anime Explosion, for those interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LwesaRn010

Can we please have a link to the video? I loved this panel, and would love to be able to rewatch the clips.

I wish I could have gone to this. It was one of the panels I was really looking forward to.

Which video? I don't know if anyone taped it.

I linked to my school project video thing earlier in the thread if that's what you were referring to. Any other particular clips you wanted to rewatch I can post.
