Safe skin paint?

Post by Selestyl » Fri Jul 15, 2016 8:28 am

Hi everyone, I'm planning a cosplay next year (won't reveal who just yet), but I'm going to need to find some safe skin paint to complete the look. It's an outlandish color (think of my friend who painted themselves blue last year), so I wanted to know if anybody knew any safe ways to do that. Thanks in advance!

Hello! For a skin paint i would recommend Snazaroo, a fairly typical answer I know. But it comes in a fairly wide variety of colors and even some glittery and metallic looking ones! I can't exactly say how good most of the colors are as I've only had experience with white, but it covers pretty well in a few coats and doesn't get too too chalky. Again though I've only had experience with the white though so I would check the color you're planning on using as the different pigment might behave differently. Hope this helped!!

I personally haven't worn it for a very long period, just a few tests here and there. However, I know that Snazaroo is a very common choice when it comes to cosplayers (especially Homestucks omg), granted it'd probably wear off faster if you sweat under the makeup, but tbh I'd assume it would last fairly well if sealed properly.

There's also Meyron, which is professional grade and therefore more expensive, but will for sure stay on better than Snazaroo. It's water based, but still needs to be sealed to prevent being rubbed off.

Awesome, thank you! Any advice for a good sealer? Also, do you know if that will work on latex prosthesis? (Nonspecific because I'm REALLY trying hard not to reveal my cosplay this early!)

They sell their own sealer, but there's tons of tutorials on youtube that talk about body paint such as Mehron and many other brands out there.
I have no idea how well Mehron paints onto latex, but I imagine it can do it no trouble. http://www.mehron.com/paradise-makeup-aq/

Their website that I linked has the basic info. More can be found on youtube as I've mentioned. I can find you tutorials later if you'd like.

Hey! It's nice to talk to you again. Anyway I would most definitely recommend it. Sealing powder and spray will help it last much longer in areas where rubbing may occur. Another thing to keep in mind is Snazaroo is water based, so it may come off if you sweat, etc, more easily if unsealed. However once dried, it shouldn't transfer or get on anything else.

It's good to talk to you again, too! Hope you're well.

I'll have to look for some sealer, then. I work from home now, so I'll be able to try quite a few things between now and the con. Um, as long as I remember not to do it on meeting days...

I've done cosplays with extensive body paint, so sorry for the wall of text - I like to use my experiences to help others. :) I can recommend Snazaroo as well for an easy to purchase, cost effective option. I've also used Mehron's metallic powder and Mehron Paradise, which are both great but like what's already been said, they are professional quality so price will go up compared to brands like Snazaroo. Again just make sure you use a good sealer (I use Ben NYE Final Seal), otherwise it will come off on EVERYTHING. Alcohol-based paints will last longer, but tend to be more expensive. For best durability I use an airbrush (lasts for HOURS), but again you have to look at cost and also whether the cost is worth it. I do cosplay charity work so it was worth the investment, but just a once or twice use at the occasional con might not be worth it.

ALTERNATIVELY, if you are going to be painting your arms and legs, you could look into "arm socks" or "glove shirts", which are basically tights with fingers sewn into them so you only have to paint your face. I used this for my Miss Martian cosplay and worked well, it just can be tricky making them. You can find a bunch of tutorials online.

Hey, walls of text don't bother me because I love learning! Thanks so much! Does the Ben Nye sealer work on latex prosthesis, like ears?

I can't say about prosthetics 100% (I've never used them), but my guess would be yes.

Hey,

Be careful with Ben Nye sealants. You'll be sticky for a while and will need to sit in front of a fan for a few minutes. I used it for my Jasper Cosplay and my wig hasn't forgiven me yet. I recommend a powder before a spray.

I make my own.
I do three parts baby powder, one part hair spray.
Put it in a bowl, take an applicator brush, i use the large ones for foundation, and apply a face moisturizer, a layer of Ben Nye/Zoolize sealant (what ever is on hand and cheap). This protects my skin. I have super sensitive skin that breaks out and sweats sooooo much.
Depending on you you might be able to get away with applying your make up. take the baby powder/hairspray and apply the tacky powder lightly over everywhere. if you get clumps on your skin take a cue tip and wet it with hairspray and break down the lump.
It works for me when every I go out in full paint. PRACTICE before show time. Forearm is the best practice spot seeing it gets soo much wear.
Hope that helps!

Thank you!

I just have one question - for the one part hairspray, how do you do that? Do you spray the bowl or do something else?

I have the baby powder in the bowl and measure out the hairspray and then pour it into the bowl. I generally have a full body paint and a few friends to touch up so I make a cup of the stuff.

I've always been a control freak and you can't really control hairspray in spray bottle. XD
I go to the dollar store and get cheap hair spray and just pour it in liquid form.
