Regarding Our 18+ Government Issued ID Policy

Post by Eilonnwy »

Due to the problem with Group pickup, I am changing the ID policy. I realize many people counted on the group pickup since they did not have a Government Issued ID. As a result, Government Issued ID is no longer required for attendees over 18. You still, however, need a photo ID. College/High School ID will suffice. I hope this will make it easier for anyone concerned about the lack of group pickup.

Please Note: Government Issued IDs are STILL required for anyone wishing to attend 18+ events. These events will be held to a strict ID policy. Government Issued Photo ID + Birthdate, non-expired. NO EXCEPTIONS.

This means:

Drivers License, State ID, Liquor ID, and Passport.

We will NOT accept expired or paper IDs.

I will make sure these changes are reflected on the website.

Post by bchan »

ok, so i turned 18 in december, and i just found out that i needed the gov id to get into the 18+ events. the thing is, i dont drive, i only have a permit. i dont have a passport either. soo, on the 14th, last thursday, i went to the rmv to get a mass id. they said it will take 5-7 business days, so i'm praying that i get it at least by this thursday cuz thats when im going into boston. worst comes to worst, say i dont get it on time.. they gave me a temporary paper mass id, can i use that? i would also bring along everything else i have, my permit, high school id, social security card!? birth certificate!? lol. would i get in with the temporary id?
i was so excited that this year i could finally go to the events i couldnt last year =/

I don't wont to be answering questions, since I am not staff.......but this question has been asked before....

For the 18+ events you need a government issued ID....and a driver's permit is a government issued ID.....as long as it's not expired, and you can see the picture alright, you should be allowed to use it; however, do not go by this, since I am not staff.

Possibly, they may want you to accompany it with other forms of identification, like a birth certificate.....

(I'm sorry if I shouldn't have given advice on your policies, but I have asked the same question myself before....)

you need to have a government issued ID to get into 18+ events with your photo name and date of birth on it. if it doesnt come in you wont be able to get into those events. I hope it does come in on time for you though. knock on wood and press your thumbs.

So, people over 18 don't need government issued IDs, but do people who are under 18 need to show a government issued ID to get their badge? Or will a high school ID suffice?

No one needs to have a government-issued photo ID to get their badge so yes, your high school ID (provided that it has your name and picture) will be fine.

Government-issued photo ID is only required for those who want to attend age-restricted (18+) events at the convention.

[color:blue]I'd like STAFF to answer this. I've got a College ID, a paper drivers' permit, and a birth certificate that I can bring with me. Will this be enough to get into 18+ Events? I don't have time to get a Gov Issued before Thursday, for certain. >>;

as far as i am aware you need either a drivers license a passport or a state id hard copy not paper to get into the 18+ events. the most i could say is try but there is a chance you will be told you cant get in with that so dont be upset if thats the cause. -looks around- umm person with more knowledge please?

Well, that's a disappointment. I have a friend who recently turned 18 working her butt off currently to get an official State ID specifically for the 18+ events, and I highly doubt that the RMV nor the postal service is efficient enough to mail her the piece of plastic before this weekend.

Apparently official, government temporary IDs that are suppose to work the same as a piece of plastic aren't valid? How strange and highly disappointing.

My group has a serious problem then... Myself and one of my friends don't have any government issued ID's (and are 17 years old) other then expired passports... She might have a greencard (would that work?), and I have an original birth certificate... That's about the best we can do... Is there any way we can change the name the badges to be under a parent's name, other group member, or used the ID's that I've mentioned?

Please, please, please someone get back to me. I'm very concerned about this!

Ice Sage, I'm sorry but this has always been the policy for 18+ events. The paper copies, in fact say right on them they are not an ID. Because these events contain adult material we are under legal obligation to accept only valid forms of ID. No exceptions.

Rhain, you don't have any problems. Anyone under 17 can use any form of photo id as long as it has photo and name. Expired passport is okay.

The Government issued ID is required for 18+ events only in which adult material will be shown. Since you're 17, you cannot attend anyway.

Hi. I want to be completely sure about something, if staff doesn't mind answering another ID question.

If I am understanding things correctly....my driver's permit, which has my picture and date of birth on it, which IS NOT expired (though only a few months from it) is fine to get into an 18+ event, since it is government issued and not expired and has my photo and my date of birth on it??

Every time staff lists sources of ID that are acceptable for 18+ events, they never list driver's permits.....so I got a little confused....I understand that most people who are over 18 have a driver's license, but I do not.

Will I be fine with my permit for both pre registration and 18+ events then?

Thank you.

[color:blue]This question was just answered for me. I'm rather...SEVERELY upset. I've finally turned eighteen, and was psyched to finally get into the 18+ Dating Game and Yaoi-related panels. This is a pretty ridiculous situation, and I am NOT satisfied with the policy. That's a first for me, and I'm very disappointed.

The Permit is paper and says "not valid ID", so AB goes along with that, no exceptions. Fun time in Boston, right? <3

Legally, we cannot permit anyone into 18+ events without a valid government-issued photo ID. If what you have says, "not valid ID", I'm afraid we legally cannot accept that. This is not something we can change or be lenient on.

This isn't us trying to be meanies. This is us not wanting to get the convention shut down for allowing minors in adult events!

Hi.

The thing is...my permit is on regular plastic, and I have used it for things like cigarettes, lottery tickets, etcetera....

Are you telling me that even if it isn't a paper version of the permit, and is a regular plastic permit, I cannot use it...?

Just asking because my situation is different then the above person's, because mine is not the temporary paper ID, but the actual ID.....

Thanks....

I don't think it's because you don't drive, it's because your ID is paper. They're not accepting paper IDs because it's rather easy to fake one, and it says "not a valid ID".

When did you apply for one? I got my plastic one about a week and a half after I applied.

Yours is fine. New York learner permits are official government-issued photo IDs and may be used as such.

oh, i didnt mean it like, "only those who drive can enter the events." i meant it like, since i dont drive, i have a paper permit.. so since i dont drive, im not allowed in. if i drove then i wouldn't have a problem. and i applied on thursday the 14th =/ the person there said it takes usually 5-7 business days, but she said it depends, and that its possible that i could even get it on wednesday. so heres hopin =[

I'm sorry, but as Patrick said, we are legally bound to this policy. We cannot accept paper IDs because not only are they easily faked but they easily transferable from, say an older sibling to a younger, or friend because you can hand them off when you get the plastic. This is the same reasoning that Massachusetts has been more strict about IDs for liquor. In MA you can't use a state ID, you need a liquor ID or Drivers license.

You might get your plastic ID in time, but if you cannot I'm sorry. You will not be permitted to attend 18+ events. Your dissatisfaction with the laws we are bound to will not change the situation.

If you wanted to go to 18+ events you needed to get your ID in a reasonable amount of time. We can't be lenient because you waited too long.

Alright, I'm gonna throw in my question:

I have a plastic Mass ID that says I'm 18, but the picture doesn't really resemble me too much. (IE, they made me take my glasses off, I was having a HORRIBLE hair day and I just woke up about 30 minutes before the picture was taken.) I've never had a problem buying cigarettes or anything you need an ID for, would I have a problem getting into an 18+ event?

If you haven't had trouble with people believing the photo is you for other things you need an ID for (like buying cigarettes), I don't know why you'd think you'd have a problem at the convention. It's still just us humans.

Okay I've read the ID policy twice trying to answer my own 2 part question and can't so here goes, sorry if it's a repeat:

I am coming with with minors (10,13,15) can I as the adult pick up all of our badges since I registered and paid for all of us (13 yr old has no id)?

Also I paid for a friend (adult) who is joining us (for the 1st time) sometime on Fri or Sat, can pick up her badge with the rest of ours since I preregistered and paid for it?

You can pick up for the children you are attending with, however the adult must pickup her own badge with an ID. However, that doesn't mean you cannot wait in line together.

Sorry if I'm just asking the same questions as someone else but I'm still unsure about what to do.

I group registered with my younger brother (14) and had planned to pick up both our badges. Is that still allowed? Does he have to be there when I pick it up, or can I just pick it up for him without him there?

Do you mean in what other situations do you need a Government issued ID? Then yes, only adult events. Registration only requires a photo ID. (so college ID would work for badge pickup, not for hentai hour)

There are many other policies that require you to be 18+. You must be 18+ in order staff, to chaperone anyone under 13. There might be some others that escape me at the moment. There are plenty of links to FAQs and policies, if you're concerned about anything in particular, I suggest you read through our links posted at the top of this forum.

Hi, I'm just a little confused about something.

This is my second year going to Anime Boston as an 18+ attendee. I do not have a Driver's license, but last year I was able to get into an 18+ event with my Driver's Permit. My permit IS a photo ID, and it contains my birth date, BUT it is a paper ID.

Will my permit be good enough to get me into an 18+ event (like the Yaoi/Yuri dating game) this year?

Whomever accepted the ID was mistaken. It states clearly on the permit that it is not a valid form of identification. (I know because I have one, and I'm looking at it right now -_^)

Only official plastic IDs (State, Liquor, License, Passport, Military, etc...) will be accepted as proof of birth date for 18+ events.

Thanks for letting us know, we will go over this with our security.

If you want to get into an 18+ event, I suggest getting a state ID, you still should have time to get the plastic card.

Post by TimidRaven »

Oh, damn! How frustrating! Well, thank you for letting me know.

This may seem like a stupid question, but how would I go about getting an acceptable ID? Where would I perchase one, and approximately how much do they cost? At this point it's not so much the amount of time I'm concerned about, but rather the cost, seeing as I'm working off a college students budget and therfore I am extremely short on money at the moment. ><;

Regarding Our 18+ Government Issued ID Policy

Post by danim »

I have a question, but it doesn't directly pertain to me.

My girlfriend is turning 21 days before the convention and her license expires that day (I find it quite strange actually because I have a year left on mine after I turn 21...but oh well) so she will need to renew it. She's going to try and have it renewed this week so that she will HOPEFULLY get it on time, but there is no way that it's guaranteed since they give you 30 days with the paper license. Also, since she has a valid license, she does not qualify for a plain state ID. If she has her paper license, and say, her college photo ID, would that be acceptable? I would hate for her to be turned away at 18+ events since she will be more than old enough >>;

It depends on when she got her license. They tend to expire 5 years (Or some number like that) after you get them, on your birthday. So she probably got her ID a year early than you did. :?

Anyway, if your friend brings her expired license with the renewal paper ID, we will accept that.
