I feel like an absolute dork asking this, but does one have to bring a "date" to the formal dance, or do we simply find dance partners there? The only other dance/ball event that I've attended a few times, there was no requirement, we'd just kinda mingle and socialize at the event and ask people if they'd like to dance.

Its not required to bring a 'date' with you. You can absolutely ask someone to dance once you're there! There's even a ballroom dance lesson that same day at 1pm in the same room it's gonna be held in, so its a good opportunity to not only brush up on your moves (if need be), but you may just meet someone who you might dance with later!
