So Retro Theme

Post by MomoMiraculous »

So I love the theme, but I'm curious as to what is going to be considered retro. My interpretation is anything pre-2000, but I wanted a staff answer so I know for sure.

The pixel art motif says 80s, but the neon fluorescent color palette and waffle iron grid on the logo says early 90s.

This could be a lot of fun! Just off the top, all these shows--in their original incarnations!--should be currently under license and available in R1 DVD/R-A Blu-ray:

Astro Boy (1963)
Princess Knight (1967)
Gatchaman (1972)
Cutey Honey (1973)
Casshan (1973)
Rose of Versailles (1979)
Dirty Pair (1985)
Bubblegum Crisis (1987)

Are we celebrating the 90's anime as well? This is really exciting.

Going along with this theme, will Retro be mimicking or portraying the art styles of back then, the mannerism of speech and voice acting from the shows, and of course the addressing fashion? We also have the fantasy/medieval themed anime from back then, just curious as well if this is the direction of the Retro theme for next year.

Retro means a lot to different people. So we're going to try to cover a wide swath of eras. Think anything from 1950s-2000.

I was thinking pre-2000 so I guess we were on the same wavelength on that one.

when i hear retro i think 20s-80s but i think i'm getting to technical

i'm not really sure how far "anime" goes, but like stuff like "speed Racer" "Yu Yu hakusho" (mana mostly since it was indeed written in the 80s to late 90s, counts, um would you count Cowboybebop?

i would think something like FMA(b) counts because the time frame it took place in, but that's getting a little to main stream...

Samuri Shampluu? stuff like that
cosplays i have complete:
Rocket Member (myself as a team rocket member)
Yurio (yuri on ice)
Rinku (yu yu hakusho
Magi (aladdin Magnoshetot)

I am only so nice once your mean to me i will ignore you and pretend you don't exist: childish but effective

The "retro" definition for next year's con theme is if a given anime/manga was first produced/published before 2001. Based strictly on that criteria, FMA (manga first appeared 2001) and Samurai Champloo (ep. 1 aired 2004) do not qualify. The other titles you've mentioned clearly do.

Maybe it's more of 'feel' kind of thing and less strictly a period of time that's got hard bounds. I'm not the one calling the shots on it, but we've got a lot of people that show up and some of them might not have even been born in 2001. For them 'retro' would be like 2010. That is weird and everything, but I'm just recommending you don't play the game that I play when I hear something on the '90's' station and it's from 1989 or 2001. It might not be worth the aggravation.

Fair enough! :D

Actually, you raise a very interesting and valid point! How would a 15-year-old attendee look at Samurai Champloo? As ancient history, no doubt. Now, how about something far older like, say, Speed Racer?

"Grandpa, you ever hear of this show?"
"Of course, my boy, of course! And believe it or not, when I was your age, I watched anime that wasn't even in
color!"
"Oooohhh...dinosaurs..."

If it's not about idol groups saving the world with crane game skills, they just don't want to know about it.

Man, Osomatsu-san is complex because it's a completely remixed and modernized version of the 60's-80's series, Osomatsu-kun. I suppose this year just might be my chill year if this year's cosplay games revolve only around retro anime characters, since I'm not a diehard fan of any series made before the 2000's.

i was thinking "FMA" because it takes place in the 1900s (i was being critical) but i guess it's not as simple as "critical" but either way i have nothing to worry about if i brake my Rinku cosplay out of the closet for one more weekend! ^^

Ironically, AB 2017's theme actually matched up with the cosplay I was planning to do...

I'll give you a hint:
It's in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the release of a Japanese game that came out in 1987. (And the series is popular here is the US! :D)
AB 2024 Cosplay(s);
