Sheraton VS Everyone Else

Post by av02116 »

This is a very broad thread about the Sheraton Hotel and whether or not it's the best one to stay at for Anime Boston.

I've been going to Anime Boston since 2005, but unfortunately couldn't attend last year. :( Now that I have the time and money for it though I have definite plans to attend 2012! I've always stayed at the Sheraton Hotel because it's attached to the Hynes Convention Center and the Prudential Center which makes it easy to get around to everything I need (cosplaying, eating, shopping, etc).

I usually share the room with one other person and we stay from Thursday to Sunday so the cost is pretty expensive ranging anywhere from $600-900 depending on the different discounts we can or can't get.

For such a long stay I thought this was pretty fairly priced even though I am only splitting it with one other person. After talking with other cosplayers though I'm debating whether or not the Sheraton Hotel should be my top choice. Other have stayed at hotels right across the street and right down the road for only $400-500 for the whole weekend!! Is it worth the walking though? The reason I choose the Sheraton Hotel is because of sheer convenience. My cosplays tend to be pretty heavy and when I need to run back and fourth from the room to the con it's just so much easier... but saving a significant amount might sway my opinion.

What are your opinions on which hotels to stay at?

I've always believed in the Sheraton for all the reasons that you've given (and the fact that I've always been lucky in regards to the usual complaints; long elevator wait, rude staff, poor housekeepers and suchlike).

When it comes to the price, I can understand your concern. The hotel I most readily recommend as an alternative is the Colonnade right across from the Prudential. It's like half the price of a Sheraton room, is quite beautiful in design, and not far to walk. The only caveat is that the hotel is much smaller, so you have to be quick to book a room from AB, as they tend to fill up quickly.

If you would like more details, I can add more in a followup. Hope this was helpful!

I've been at the Sheraton for AB since 2009 and I've found it much easier. I've had friends stay outside at different hotels and they have the problems of making the commute back and forth to change cosplay or what not. I like the Sheraton because of the easier trip down to the con especially if I am in a large costume. It was difficult enough getting down the stairs and escalators. It would have been a nightmare to try and cross the street in that when I could barely see. I had an escort the whole time to begin with. Being at the Sheraton made it about ten times easier. It seems that you said you had heavier cosplays so I would suggest you stay at the Sheraton maybe.

I understand your price problem as well. I've paid around 300 dollars for a weekend spilting it between three people. It is a big chunk of money that I don't really enjoy spending. Though, in the end, I feel it is worth that you don't have to rush onto a train or a busy side walk in the morning; instead you can go down some stairs and a hall to arrive at your destination.

Another thing you could do if you really wished to drop the price of your room, I know it is an overly used answer, but have more than one other person room with you. It does cut the price down a bit and every little bit counts. The decision is up to you though and you should do whatever you feel comfortable with.

I agree with you both about the convenience of the Sheraton, I love it!! But I am just a little upset with the costs I've seen so far (even with all the discounts I've been told to check out). I would love to split the room with another person or maybe two!! But my friend went last year splitting the room with three other girls and I guess that was over capacity for the size of the room?? I've never heard of anyone having the problem until she told me so it's made me very weary about splitting the room with more people... :/

Last year was my first time at AB... and I wanted to keep it as cost-friendly as could be! My boyfriend and I went and didn't share our room with anyone else, so we wanted to get a good deal on prices. We ended up staying at the MidTown Hotel (which is accross the street, and a VERY short walk!). It was the BEST decision! It cost us if I can remember... about $450 for the weekend (3 nights, with AAA member discount). The staff was amazing, so friendly! Rooms were clean too, which is super important to me XD

The only thing that worried me was the walk.... because I was in the Artist Alley selling hand-made plush and hats... so on a few occasions this required us to lug suitcases / totes to the con! The walk was very short, and there were always people around (con-goers) so it never felt creepy or anything like that. The only problem I can see would be if it rained, but if you bring and umbrella it should be fine :)

Anyways, if you want to save some money, and don't mind a short walk, get a room at the MidTown hotel! And think, if you shared a room there it would be so much cheaper per person compared to the Sheraton :)

Yea, the Midtown has been spoken highly of to me. Though I'm pretty sure it can be difficult for some cosplayers due to the fact that the bridge from the Prudential closes earlier than you might realize (1-2am?)

It's 2 am I think but the Midtown requires walking through the Prudential mall (which they don't lock) and then outside and down the street anyway so the sky bridge doesn't affect accessing the Midtown. The hotels that are connected to the sky bridge are the Marriott and the Colonnade I believe. There might be one other than connects I can't remember but I know at least 2 hotels connect and I know the Marriott does because I have stayed there for AB before. The thing about the Midtown is if you stay for the dances, you can't be afraid of walking across the street at 4 am. It's not a long walk and the area is pretty safe but some people feel uncomfortable doing that. I probably would if I was by myself but since there is always someone with me, I have no issues with it. I have stayed at both the Midtown and the Marriott and like both locations well enough. :)

People make way too much fuss over the skybridge closing. OMG you have to go down a few stairs and then walk across a street with no traffic because it's 2 in the f*cking morning in a super safe area of the city! The horror! how will we ever survive?!?

Can't really complain that much though. The more that fall for that doomsaying, the fewer of the shrill weaboo masses flood the other hotels and choke their elevators all day.

@Bashar: lol hey whatever works. I just like how I don't have to hear the dance music until 3 am. It's irritating when you're trying to sleep and that's all you hear. For CTCon and AB the few times I've stayed at the official hotels for both, I was almost always right above the dances so it came through the floor. :|

Thank you Marmalade! I will definitely check it out especially since it's not the first time I've been recommended to that hotel. :)

By the way, does anyone know what the discount usually is to be in the AB blocks at the Sheraton?

A friend got his room already and got 20% off by prepaying for the room right as he reserved the room, but then also got another 15% off by using is AAA card. He asked about the discount for AB and was told to just call back once everything is settled because the woman who was reserving the room for him hadn't heard of the discount yet.

I was going to do the same thing, but figured I'd wait till the actual AB blocks are posted to see what the discount is really like.

I don't think the price for the AB block is up yet. I imagine you will see that before too long though. They usually start updating things around now for next year and should have everything you need to know up by Decemberish But I know from last year it was just over $200 a night including the taxes and I want to say $180 something a night before (taxes)? But I'm not 100% sure on that.
Still too early for all that yet. I just book early because I don't stay at the Sheraton. I like the quiet reprieve of close but NOT the hotel with the late night dances in it. :)

It's not actually a discount in the traditional sense (ie, X, or X% off). It's a negotiated fixed rate. It's also occasionally higher than the going rate sans-discount.

BasharOfTheAges, that's correct - I forgot!! I thank you. :) It can be higher?? Hmm.. Not sure what to do. I love the Sheraton so much though, might as well dish out the cash for it. :)

Checking on other hotels, I did this search on Google Maps: [Back Bay, Boston, MA hotels]. The reddish spots are also hotels/lodgings—mouseover them to see their names.

I've generally preferred the Marriott. It's not literally at the convention like the Sheraton but it's just a walk through the Prudential Mall (you don't even have to go outside, which is nice if you have a cosplay that can't get wet in the rain). And I've found that the rates are slightly less expensive than the Sheraton (though only by a little). If you find a few more friends to room with and fill up the room to 4 people it cuts the cost down as well. And the Marriott is very nice, too, plus you have a feeling of getting "away" from the convention at night, so no loud noises or anything.

I am a fan of the Hilton - as it is just a short trip across the lobby of the Sheraton and boom your at the Hilton. I have also found, w/o the prepayment for an even lower price, that the Hilton consistently offers lower than con rate prices, friendlier staff, more confortable rooms etc etc.

If your truly looking for a comparable experience or better, and money is not the largest issue, the Hilton is a good alternative - no sky bridge required ;P

As I've gotten older and money's become SLIGHTLY (very slightly) less of an issue (double-income with a husband who is also an otaku is helpful! >.>) I prefer the Sheraton for the sheer convenience of it. It's a bit more money, but I think for being able to run trips back and forth between your room in 10 minutes or less (elevator depending) if you need the bathroom and don't want to fumble in stalls, or want to fix up your cosplay in privacy but get back to the events quickly, and whathaveyou... I think it's all well worth it. You can certainly cut the cost by grouping with a couple other folks or something -- We haven't really done that though, we tend to like the quiet when we're ready to call it a night, and past experiences with hotel groups have not quite allowed for that... So we just suck it up and save a few months before the con as best we can. >.>

Of course, the cheapest thing: live in Boston or have a friend that does.
No need for a hotel room then.

Only downsides: Have to walk from friend's place to T, and so can't stay for the after midnight stuff unless I want to pay for a cab. One does NOT walk alone at night past the Public Garden or Boston Common.

Same here, as long as I've been going to AB I've been using the Marriott. its clean, the rooms are nicely sized, the staff are great, its generally cheaper than the SHeraton, though its connected to the mall meaning you can walk to and from the con without ever stepping outside, which is great for those who don't want to risk traffic/risk the rainy days.

We tried the Johnson down the street from the con but while it was cheap, it was...not that great. We ended up needing a cab anyway every day because of all the stuff we had to carry, and the room was uncomfortably tight.

Ya unless the Sheraton drops its prices, we're sticking the Marriott C: For conveinence, saftey, and price.

We're lucky that AB is located where it is since there are a lot of hotels around the convention center. Unfortunatly many of the them are on the more expensive end but if you look hard enough you can find some good deals. Check the price each hotel has on their websites, see if they have AAA or similar discounts, compare prices with discount hotel sites (hotwire, hotels.com, etc.), and keep your eyes out for short term sales. You need to decide how far from the close to the con you want to be, if you don't mind walking a few blocks your options increase even more. I usually use hotwire to book my hotel for AB and have gotten some really good deals. This year however I'm going with a larger group (the only hotwire deals I found near the con are for max 2 people rooms) so I need to use all the other resources to find the best rate. Right now the Marriott is winning as the best price I've seen for a 4 person room.

Good luck!

I personally stay at the Hyatt in Cambridge across the way. My car stays in the covered parking garage, and it's a short trip by cab to the convention site. The hotel is alot more quiet and i don'nt have to worry about hallway noise and all night con room parties you usually deal with at a closer hotel to the event. The prices are reasonable (142.00 a night booked for 2012) and i have'nt had any complaints in the 4 years i've stayed there.

I don't know what the non-convention block price would be for the Sheraton but it's not usually a cheap hotel. I'm staying at the Marriott for next year for $170 a night but that's with a AAA discount. I think the regular rate is a bit closer to $190 but don't quote me on that.

Here's my $.02...

There are a couple of things that really leave a foul taste in my mouth about the Sheraton...

First:

The Deposit business....

I often travel to cons with a host of people who give me cash the day we check in, I use my debit card to hold the room, and have them pay in full with the cash that I get from peeps at check in, and I feel that the Sheraton wants to put a hold on my card, or charge a deposit at the time of the reservation. I don't know if that is still the case, but I didnt like the way things went a few years ago...

Room size:

I often have people in beds and on the floor, and a lot of people have a lot of gear. The sheraton rooms are rather small and cumbersome if you have a lot of cosplayers and such..

and the thing i hate most: PARKING!!!

the sheraton charges 39 a night for a regular car and as much as 90 dollars a night for an SUV!!!!

so that's the reason that the Midtown is my official Anime Boston Hotel.

Now to sing the benefits of the Midtown:

Reservations: It was very easy to get a double bed room for 169 a night, might be even cheaper if you have triple A (I dont) be advised that rate is based ona two person occupancy.

Location:

Seriously, this place cannot be beat! You walk out of the exity of the pru by cheesecake factory and coldstone and you can see it right down the road.

I have made the walk with artist alley stuff and it isnt so bad if you have helpers and a good carrying or rolling system.

Room size:

OMG HUGE! i wanna say atleast one and a half times the size of the sheraton. There is also a lot of storage space and a larger bathroom, plus they have the sink seperate from the rest of the bathroom (good for cosplayers as people can do make up while others shower...)

you could easily fit three twin aerobeds or sleeping bags and still be able to walk around. Service was good and the rooms were clean.

I think the best part about the midtown is the parking. You can park for 18 a night and the car is RIGHT UNDER THE HOTEL!

And i beleive they are pet friendly >^-^<

I agree with Marikotoeii on the cons of the Sheraton hotel. I roomed there once because someone else int he group booked. never again will I room there. I room at the Marriott from now one. It's way better doesn't charge a fee to reserve the room. Plus there is a "T" stop right next to the skywalk bridge for easy access.
I park my SUV at the Alewife station all weekend 9Thursday to monday) and it costs me about $35. Then it's just a short right on the T to the Copley Place Stop and ashort walk up tot he hotel. I works rather well.
I paid the hotel in cash last year and they gave us the larger corner room for no extra charge.

Re: Sheraton VS Everyone Else

Post by Kagomechan »

While I appreciate your choice to stay somewhere other than the Sheraton (as much as that hurts Anime Boston if we don't meet our attrition minimums), I have never heard of the Sheraton charging more for an SUV. Yes, valet parking is expensive. Self-parking is also expensive in Boston for most of the hotels and garages. Anime Boston has housed several SUVs in valet parking in the past and the charge has never been higher than that of a regular car.

The Sheraton, Colonnade, and Marriott will all put a hold on your card when you check in. The amount varies from hotel to hotel. Generally, using a debit card when you check in is a bad idea as it will take 3-5 days for the hold to be released, vs. 1-2 days on a credit card because the banks are typically slower to process the release.

Note: The Midtown is now sold out of double bed rooms because PAX has a block there. Check out the Colonnade (we have 15 double bed rooms in a block there) and the rate is similar to the Midtown. See the hotel page for more information.

If you call the sheraton and ask them what their parking rates (non valet) are they said it was 39 standard and 96 for extended (so anyone with a large truck or suv better check on that)

It wasn't something I had known about before but I guess its part of the Prudential, since thats where they have people park.

I have a few questions about the AB blocks at the Sheraton, their website is really hard to find info on, or just straight up doesn't have the answers I'm looking for, so maybe someone knows from past experience...

1.) Is there free WiFi?
2.) Do their TVs have DVD players?
3.) Are you able to request a mini-fridge? If so, what does it run you?
4.) If you opted for a room in the quiet block, is it acceptable to have a few people up to the room on Thursday night to watch some anime in-room? (Nothing rowdy or too late at night obviously).

Thanks guys, appreciate any answers you might have! ^_^

The Sheraton is offering 50% off of wifi for people that stay in the Anime Boston block. Usually the fee is $9.95 per day, so it will be $4.98/day.

Their TVs do not have DVD players.

Yes, you can request a refrigerator. I am not sure how much they cost.

Yes, you can bring people to your room. As long as you're not rowdy, you'll be fine. As stated in the Hotel Code of Conduct, there will be a three strikes rule. You'll receive two warnings, the hotel may ask you to leave.

Thanks alot for the answers! Very helpful. :) I'm certain I can spare $5 a day for WiFi... XD Do you request things like that in advance, or just tell them when you're checking in?

It should be automatic as long as you book in our block but asking about it upon check in is also not a bad idea. :)

Been at the Marriott for the last 3-4 years now. No outside going (unless it's within a specific three or so hours because of the skywalk) and still close. Price has always been around 600 for my group. Same this year. I been skimming the marriott's prices lately, and well, I think we are leaving the 600s next year. >.>

Hotel prices are far more reactionary than inflationary - i.e. they'll charge what they can get away with charging. Upwards pricing isn't a trend of higher prices year over year, they're a trend of AB and PAX being on the same weekend and hotels around the entire city know they can gouge because we'll pay it. Supply is limited (and falling) and demand is unnaturally high and pretty rigid.

Indeed. I knew this year was going to be more difficult than it has been in the past to find a good hotel deal so I booked early before the price jump.

We booked our hotel last night and the Sheraton is pretty much all booked up. If you were planning on waiting any longer you probably shouldn't. Surprisingly, the Sheraton was cheaper this year compared to the Marriott (which we booked the last 2 years.)

Well, I mean, I have looked at the marriott's pricing from now to November, and november, for some reason, it hits roughly 900. That far away, on weekends that aren't Holiday ones (Yes, did the week it wasn't Veteran's Day or Thanksgiving) as well as some in October. They all seem pretty high towards the end of the year, while cheaper around now. I actually looked to get a feel on how much one could save getting a weekend that far away, but when I saw that, it just scared me.

Doesn't mean that will be the case for next year's AB though that's too far away to tell since it's just barely 2012.

Ever try to book a flight mote than 6 months out through a 3rd party booking site? same idea. You must really meed to go on those exact days, so we're going to make you pay through the nose for it.

We have a multi-year contract with the Marriott to lock in rates through 2015.

For the most part, rates next year will be less than this year because we won't be on the same weekend as PAX East.

Since my friend has an aversion to trains, we stayed in the Hilton last year, and will be staying there again. We just have to walk across the street and through the lobby of the Sheraton, and poof, we're there. I did remember the Hilton was a bit cheaper for us to stay there. The only downsides were the parking (I think we paid $130 for 4 days/4 nights), having to hang out in the lobby to use their free internet (but really, what time did I have to play around on the Web?), and having to pay in advance for the room (It could have been more like a hold on a card for something -- I'm not 100% on how that works). For the most part, it was nice and quiet at night and we had no problems with the service. Even when the fire alarms were being wonky on Sunday morning, the manager came around and apologized to everyone (at least, those in the lobby) personally for the error.
