Do I need an orange tip?

Post by RingoDeathStarr »

I made a Death Ray for a Dr. Horrible cosplay but while spray painting it, my boyfriend sprayed over the orange tip.

I painted the tip red and silver. I'm just wondering if I have to make it orange in order to carry it around the convention.

Might I be able to avoid the orange tip by plugging the barrel with something?

The trigger is incapable of moving and the prop is going to be held upside down making it not actually look like a weapon.

I really don't plan on leaving the convention area, though. I never have in the previous years I've gone to AB because I get commute to the convention every day via my parents. So, if they need to pick me up, they want me to stay at the con.
The only chance of me leaving to walk around Boston is if I end up getting a room at the hotel (where I could leave the prop).

All weapons con only be approved once they are reviewed at the convention itself. If you wish to get an idea of what you should do, I recommend contacting security directly.

Our weapons policy is listed here: http://www.animeboston.com/about/weapons/

Yes you need an orange tip. This is both a MA law and Fed law, so CYA and have a quarter inch of blaze orange at the tip.

Would that old Power Rangers blaster (the gun they each had back in the first season) need an orange tip? That things look nothing like a real gun.

yup,

anything that can be remotely similar to a gun has to have the blaze orange tip.
Not local or state law, but a fed one.

Any ideas on how best to include the orange tip with Yoko's rifle?

Could I just make an orange plug for the end of the muzzle or would that not be visible enough?

I'd probably just paint like an inch of the end of the barrel orange. Like was said, it's a federal law so I doubt there are any conventions you can go to that wouldn't require the orange tip.

I know some people don't want orange on their weapon for any sort of reason, but boston police do take things seriously and you NEED that orange tip there. Last year I had brought in a airsoft gun with the trigger missing, though no orange tip and 1 of the officers gave me a hard time about it. I strongly suggest painting the tip orange again, even if it doesn't look real. (Just going by personal experience FYI.)

Are weapons allowed to be made out of normal wood? And if so, If it was persay, a thin sword, where would the orange tip be? The handle or the edge of the flattened blade?

Orange tips are required on firearms. They're the traditional sort of "This is fake!" announcement to the world.

I know that you can't approve any weapons here but I just would an opinion on these swords. My cousin made them out of wood he brought at Home Depot.
