Had an idea for a panel I thought might be fun. A lot of geeks (myself included), have trouble meeting people or socializing at events and need a little extra push.

How about a speed dating game?

People can register in advance or have 20-30 minutes to register before the start, choose what group they'd like to go in (straight, gay, lesbian, bi, etc), then each group has 5 minutes to chat with one person in a row, then move onto the next.

Everyone gets a number and a card to write down the number of the person they meet. At the end we can collect the cards and let them know if anyone they were interested in, was also interested in them.

I'm thinking this would work better in the Sheraton rather than the Hynes, but either could work.

Any thoughts on whether or not this would be of interest?

in theory i think this could be a good idea, but you would need several panelists in charge of it, including people who are specifically looking out for signs of harassment, unwanted touch/contact, etc. this could easily attract predators, unfortunately, so i think you need to be very careful if you're going to do it and make sure everyone's safety is a big priority.

I understand that AB is a great place to meet people. However, speed dating doesn't fall with in our programming guidelines as an event or panel. We understand that people want to make friends at AB though! We do plan on having more social programming this year. :)

Just read the schedule today, do you have a list of the social programming prepared for this year to help out the geeks trying to socialise? I’m a bit overwhelmed by all of the panels, heh.

How do I sign up for the speed dating?

Hello!

There is no speed dating. We have speed friending which is similar, but the focus is finding new friends not necessarily a date. There is no sign up ahead of time for speed friending.
